As an alternative to button mashing...
What if you had to press a sequence of buttons in a special order?
For example, if you were forging a sword, it might go like this:
Down, A, S, Right, Q, Down
Well, I dunno. Anything but button mashing :o
It might even make creating some stronger weapons challenging?
