Actually those are both Latin words as well.
A lot of "English" words are stolen from French, Latin and Greek. Before that Old English was almost entirely Germanic based. So the language we have today isn't just a natural progression from that, otherwise we'd be speaking German. Thusly the difference between German and English is all of those French, Latin and Greek words we stole, which is a hell of a lot of words.
Protest is from the Latin protestari.
Agriculture is from the Latin agricultūra.
