Well I generally agree, but you don't want to
(A) put them in the situation to successfully do this nor
(B) say "no you're dumb" if it happens.
I'm not sure if it decreases the value of the items, but you could try converting them to gold nuggets with alchemy. This may make it much easier to sell them en masse.
