If you ask me defining the lightsource, the outline, the poses, the color pallets its all up to their individual creativity on certain subjects. That i beleive is what they mean by there is no exact way to make a gfx. The light source greatly defines the shading.
None the less, when we talk about shading to me that is more about "correctness" like you said. You need to shade specific parts a certain way depending on your choice of light source, texture shape.
Im no art teacher but i have been making gfx for ages. I just call that common sense.
