I agree with Sean, the portal should be strictly for warping you to the 'home base' even if it's under attack, and if under attack you should be able to select a spawn spot outside the base.
Also just being able to click on a base and then warping there would be considerably nice.

Also you should make this more obvious, who has the sense to randomly grab that... You need to somehow make people notice how to select a base, maybe a sign above it?
