Well, there are certain instances where 'pillow shading' does and doesn't work.

If you have an irregular-shaped object, sometimes pillow shading will look somewhat normal if done properly. (The artist in this tutorial made the shades too far apart, so it gets really dark around the edges.)

But if the shape is very recular, like a square or circle or whatever, pillow shading looks terrible on it.
