Few options I can think of
  • Make a button to toggle back and forth between the summoned and the player, using setfocus/view, whatever its called to put whatever you are controlling in the middle of the screen, and have what is not being controlled, follow.
  • The player disappears and assumes control of the summoned completely, changing your GUI to reflect the summoned, its stats, and its attacks. When it's defeated you change back to the player... maybe you could also make the player take some damage, or have some sort of effect on the player so he cannot summon again for a time?
  • You still assume control of your player, and you can move the summoned around with mouse clicks (diablo anyone? )
  • When you cast the summon spell, your physique changes in retrospect to what you summoned. For example, if you summon a bomy, you would get some spikes and turn a different color maybe? An avatar, you get their "crystal" (The one on the altar) on your chest or something, along with an aura (just some shiny light surrounding you, nothing like that silly flaming aura spell). You would also gain their particular attribute bonuses (adding to your current ones), not saying they are defined right now, but they would be if added. It would give casters a chance to get some melee in or something, idk. When defeated you change back to your player and you have either a cool down effect, and/or some attribute effects (minus -hp/mp, or other stats for some time).

That's all I can think of for now. Second and last one are similar, but think of the last one more as a "buff" and you are still the same character, just looking a bit different to show you used the spell. The second one, you control the summoned completely.
