Most weapons will have "slots". Where you can put enchanted items such as rubies and emeralds which can add effects or power to your weapon. They are all element based (not literal scientific elements of course) based on the old alchemy elements. Earth, Air, Fire, Water. The more based you are on a certain element, the more these enchanted items will effect your weapons. It is in effect, alchemy.
We are always trying to come up with new idea's, so if anyone has any that'd be great. =P

well all i can think of is metroid and Resident evil, while they have very single minded and linear game styles (albiet in my
opinion much more exciting ones than the over used one you chose) they added alot of reaserching and reading that gave players a borader sense of the world rather than the mindless blood and killing, diablo 1 and 2 did this to some extent as well but it was basicaly a dungeon crawler. that said you could easily write up a storm and try to attach the player through story.
not knowing much about your game and the way sequences present themselves thats about the best i can come up with
