Actually you used the wrong one. In the instance that you used it in it would say "it is" which would be It's. "its" is a substitution for a noun,
some examples:
Its had a hard life - Talking about something
It's going to kill us - Shortening it is
(Just for future reference, not trying to make anybody look stupid or anything) =P
