A switchback could never work since it's now far cheaper and easier, except in a few very rare cases (new limited event items like Cowboy Hat) to just buy the item already at +12 instead of buying the EAs and get someone to EA it for you.

Back when Tec could first do +6 and stuff, EA's were in high-demand, so almost everyone wanted them because alchemy had not yet been fixed and mad-amounts of plat couldn't be gotten easily (except for a few bugs that were around for ~a day).
