Yes its also an edit of Microsoft Windows since we are using it as operating system and an edit of C++ since we are using it to program, i can continue probably all the night like that...
Do you think lot of game companies make there own engine ? There is probably less than 10 engines used by 95% of the games, but most of the game look different and have different gameplay also.
