ip range

is there a way to set your ip range so that if you go somewhere else, you can still use rc?

Could you do something like **.**.***.***?

thanks, jamerson

That used to be possible by using " *.*.*.* " and i think it's still possible, you'll just get:

"The ip range *.*.*.* is insecure!
Please set a more precise ip range!"

I'm not sure if they said it was mandatory to have an IP and/or pc id, for security reasons. What i suggest, is just add the client rc to yourself and set your IP through that when needed. I don't think it an IP or pcid is required to use Client-RC, just need to be in server options.

I can't use client-RC when my id/pc id is not set to the ip/pc id that I'm using.

*.*.*.* as an IP means anyone who has your password can access your RC. However, I believe PWA highly frown upon this as it is such a security risk... in fact I don't even think they allow this for Classic servers to use(I remember way back they didn't, and this was extremely problematic for AOL users and such). I'm not sure how they treat UC servers though.

I know that on Classic playerworlds, a full wildcard ip range gets replaced by an a.b.*.* range including a pc id when the account logs on. No idea if that applies to u/c playerworlds as well though.

RC's on UC worlds are no different than on the other servers. The IP range or pc id must still be set. Only 2 wild card spots are allowable though as Crow said.

In response to Jameson, no, you cannot have a full wildcard range set. If you're using your own laptop at these locations then set your pc id in rights. Otherwise your only option is to make sure someone besides you has setrights so they can set your ip range for you when you are somewhere else. Keep in mind that you can have more than one ip range set at a time. (in case you didn't know)

Haha, I remember when I was accounts administrator I was living with my sister at the time and she had AOL. I had to sign on/sign off about 10-15 times to be able to get the right first two series of numbers so I could log on RC.

Ya, PCID is somewhat recent(wasn't added until guest accounts/community names were made... I THINK. Could have been earlier).

Earlier internally, I believe. But they couldn't be used instead of an ip range back then :p

Hmm... ya, I think I do remember globals being able to ban computers way back when, even though RC's couldn't.
