Era Hotel Website and Logo

So me and Tim have started to work on Era Hotel.

I took the time and made a great looking logo for Era Hotel, so take a look!

http://i40.tinypic.com/2hwpmds.jpg

And the official website:

http://era-hotel.webs.com/

The website gets updated daily, so that is good!

I'd like some opinions on the work Tim and I have done over the days.

Thanks!

papajchris 06-07-2009 05:32 AM

Logo looks cool, and site looks cool; GJ

Floor format link doesn't work

Scary_Sock 06-07-2009 05:38 AM

Thanks!

Sorry for the "redish" background. I drew it and an "accident" happend with.

papajchris 06-07-2009 05:55 AM

The logo also has a messed up background. It looks like you started to clear it and then forgot or something or is that the background your talking about aswell?

cbk1994 06-07-2009 05:56 AM

I almost had a seizure looking at the website, either choose a color scheme, or stick to black and white. Rainbow does not suit a webpage.

Tim_Rocks 06-07-2009 07:32 AM

The website is now completed everything should work now!

http://era-hotel.webs.com/index.html

Enjoy!

cbk1994 06-07-2009 08:10 AM

The black and white contrast is too strong, it almost hurts your eyes.

Rather than using a frame, use a frameset, so that the top 20% or so is the logo, and the bottom 80% or so is the content. People could resize using the divider. This would also make it so the entire page doesn't scroll, only the content, which is what you were trying to achieve.

Change the color of links so they stand out more.

For the table, make the top row a darker gray shaded color, and then the rest of the rows should alternate between a white background and a really slight gray background.

Don't be afraid to add color, just don't make it look crazy.

I don't think Era Hotel needs a Website, unless you can communicate with the Graal DBs using your Website, which I think would be even possible...

Possible but really a waste of time.

Yeah, well no one is going to use the website, I mean Sales scripted something in-game for it, right?
I haven't seen it, but it's probably way better than the website.

Also isn't the logo a little too big?

Thing i noticed was you have rented out the penthouse for "yourself", to be honest hotel workers should "NOT" have any rooms at all for themself, it should be all for customers.

Vman13x 06-07-2009 03:32 PM

Ohh owned!!!!!

Frankie 06-07-2009 04:18 PM

the logo is cool but I don't see how a torn up book with blood stains represents the Era Hotel. are we that ghetto?

Maybe, But he also needs a place to live?

what if he rented the room before he was hired as hotel staff?

if that's not the case, then it's pretty ridiculous seeing as how the penthouse is the largest room in the hotel. it's stupid to reserve that for yourself.

Yeah, I did rent it before I was hired. I can't remember who booked the room for me though.

Also, It is impossible to book yourself a room. You must have another staff member book you a room.

DazJenova 06-07-2009 05:03 PM

Alright but still no hotel staff should have any rooms at all for themself, if they work at the hotel.

Scary_Sock 06-07-2009 05:07 PM

There are only 3 staff members at EH.
Those people are Tim, Me, and Melissa. We don't hire much because I usually just book a room right when it becomes available.

Also, I'm pretty sure Melissa or Tim won't book me a room, but I wouldn't ask them anyways. Me or Tim wouldn't book Melissa a room. And I don't think Tim would want a room there.

Frankie 06-07-2009 05:08 PM

well he paid for the hotel room when he wasn't even hired there so it should be fair game.

DazJenova 06-07-2009 05:12 PM

Yeah that's no problem, just saying any hotel staff shoudn't have a room when they are working there, if it was payed for before they were hired than thats fair.

We aren't that ghetto, and I didn't intend to make the logo look ghetto. I added blood so I can have some fun while drawing the logo. I also was trying to make the book look all creepy. Thats why you see that its black, torn, and ripped.

DazJenova 06-07-2009 05:23 PM

To be honest if you look inside the hotel it's nice and decorated, i don't think a "spooky, torn bloody book" represents it well enough, it's supposed to be a 5star hotel not some crappy dark inn.

Well its just a logo. I can make a new one today if you guys want.

Edit: So this is the "Making of" the logo.
Attachment 48665

I was going to put it green and thought about changing the color:
Attachment 48666

I didn't go with it. I'll maybe change it later today.

Something that has something to do with a Hotel please.

Vman13x 06-07-2009 06:04 PM

Agreed, why would you make a stupid logo that has nothing to do with the hotel and then make a thread about it?

Okay.

So we've already brought this up, but you really need to think about target audiences and intended visual content when you're working on a piece.

If this were a drawing simply for your own enjoyment, certainly, add any elements that make it fun for you. That being said, this looks absolutely nothing like a hotel logo. Is it a terrible drawing/logo? No. It just doesn't work with your theme. At all. You're working for a hotel, not a haunted house.

You can still incorporate your own style along with elements that make the project fun for yourself, but you have to stick within guidelines. Like Daz said, think five star hotel. Convey the sense of aristocracy and comforts that go along with a classy hotel. That being said, don't go all cliche. Don't go drawing a bunch of fluffy pink pillows with dollar bills, chocolates, and fountains of joy all being enjoyed by a rich, classy sophisticate sporting a fabulous monocle, cane, and flannel tuxedo.

Symbolism certainly has its place, but use it sparingly. Consider employing the surrealist tactic of taking everyday symbols/objects loaded with pre-conceived notions/meanings, and create unusual juxtapositions with them. Advertise for the good of the hotel, but perhaps make us question why we crave the comforts of such an establishment; thus throwing us into an existential crisis for the next few days or weeks. Of course, that'd be deviating from a simple logo and turning it into an artistic statement (which would likely be a bad idea in this case)...but that's why I tend to dislike logos in the first place.

Try to think outside the box, but realize you do have guidelines if you're working with/for someone else.

papajchris 06-07-2009 09:22 PM

oh just a suggestion that has nothing to do with the logo, but it was something i was planning on doing while i worked at the hotel. You should try to get ads from like Gun Point or Ammo mart or w/e business and have them on your website. Just a thought to make some extra money.

Now about the logo. Maybe a book isn't even the way to go. Maybe more of a pamphlet looking thing that makes the hotel look like a beach side resort somehow? Or if not a pamphlet maybe a poster? Just thoughts!

Scary_Sock 06-07-2009 09:24 PM

I can make a poster. It was supposed to be a guestbook, but apparently, it has nothing to do with a hotel. >.>
So I can make a pamphlet or a poster. Im still taking suggestions.

Apparently your hotel involves people's arterial veins spontaneously spraying blood all over the front of it, thereby forcing them to scream in agony and tear out small parts of the binding/pages.

Pelikano 06-08-2009 11:58 AM

Just for the record: A ****ING BOOK DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH AN HOTEL

ty

DuBsTeRmAn 06-08-2009 02:01 PM

Somehow it does, You can see who has a room in there etc..
But you are right, It isn't the right sign for a hotel..

Scary_Sock 06-08-2009 04:48 PM

Like I said, what should I make then?

Frankie 06-08-2009 04:50 PM

don't make anything. you don't need a website. the same layout on your website can probably be scripted into a gui window.

Pelikano 06-08-2009 05:07 PM

I don't see a point in a website that doesn't update manually, transferring Data from Graal's DBs..

Employees already have a GUI which shows them all of the rooms and time left

Players can just read the poster on the wall

DustyPorViva 06-08-2009 07:03 PM

I agree with the fact this is probably not needed. A whole website for something easily accessible in-game is meh, especially something as trivial as hotel bookings.

Even so, I think a more suitable logo would perhaps be a front-desk with someone sitting there(bellboy, I think they're called?) and Era Hotel in fancy letters behind them(much like any hotel). Or maybe a skyline view of the building or something.

Scary_Sock 06-08-2009 07:06 PM

I'll draw a skylien view of the building then. I'll have it finished later on today, as I have other important things to do in real life. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Also, The GUI is pretty great. Thanks for it, Sales!
