Should natural landmarks be named?

Classic is an old server... the oldest in fact. It was developed around the idea that it would be the only server to represent Graal officially. Therefor, nothing was really named. Hell, the 'server' didn't even have a name because it was the only official server, therefor referred to as "Graal" or the "Official server".

So, 10 years down the line it seems we're officially screwed. Lakes have no names, mountains have no names, hell, even whole continents and islands have no names. Nothing has a name.

Now I find it hard to even refer to the server because all it's come to be known as is 'Classic', which to be honest is a dumb name. It reflects nothing beyond the fact that it is a classic server, which is even more confusing when ALL the 'official' servers are called classic servers.

In summary, do you think it would be a dishonor to the nostalgia of the server to start naming things now?

Rufus 06-04-2009 01:11 AM

Most things do have names as far as I know, even if they're just been adopted from what people have called them over the years.

We should perhaps make a map of this stuff because honestly I can't think of many for any, though that may be because I haven't really played in a while.

papajchris 06-04-2009 01:31 AM

Names would also help newbies. When talking to a staff member, it's sometimes hard for them to explain directions it seems like. Im sure it would be easier to say "take a left at ________ lake and then go past ________ mountain.

Mark Sir Link 06-04-2009 01:31 AM

penor lake has a name

BlackSolider 06-04-2009 03:56 AM

All the towns have a name obviously, though some of the mountains could use them I suppose.

All towns have a name, aye... but lakes don't, rivers don't, mountains don't, the main continent doesn't... Everything within vicinity of the castle just has Graal prefixed to it... Graal city, Graal castle, Graal river... which honestly doesn't make any sense because the game was called Graal, which is not really a fitting name for settings. That would be like naming a village in Zelda, Zelda Village. However, it's too late to change that, but the lack of proper naming makes it very difficult to work with a story or such that relates to Graal. Hell, it's hard to even name the server anything other than Classic that actually makes sense.

I could be wrong, however. Like I said I haven't played in a long time, but even so if there are names they're not obvious. I'd love to see a map collab that properly names all the areas/landmarks.

Rufus 06-04-2009 04:00 AM

Man, I don't know if I can be bothered to do this but I'll try and give it a shot when I have some extra time I guess. It's not as in depth as you're asking though, but maybe someone else might remember more than I do, such as Tyhm for example.

Luda 06-04-2009 04:01 AM

river is named Nafet's River

I don't. However, it could be a lot more obvious. Having to go through 10 different versions of the overworld and hunting down old libraries and stuff to search for proper names is a bit odd for a game. And if it does, I think it'd be nice to have an official, easy way to find out. Hence the map idea.

If the things I've listed has a name, please correct me! These things should be more important than they are currently, rather than just thrown into obscure bookcases in random houses. I'm really interested in giving the continent an official name, as it seems really silly that the most important piece of land is currently nameless. However, I'm wondering if it'd be 'right' to retrofit this sort of thing.

Rufus 06-04-2009 04:07 AM

What map are we going off here, current?

Sure. Regardless of the many changes the overworld has seen, most landmarks were just moved. I think we could apply the changes of one map to the next easily.

However, it might be more productive to go with the largest and most developed(GTA's?) overworld map, as to cover the most landmarks possible.

DarkCloud_PK 06-04-2009 04:33 AM

Most areas of the original GTA have their old names. I think the only thing not named is most of the area on the northwest area of the main island. The main island itself I don't think has ever been named, you would have to look through the old storyline, I think its mentioned. Not like anyone paid attention to the story.

If you were bored enough, you could probably take the current map and start labelling it in mspaint

Doing it in Photoshop, actually :)
That way people can edit the PSD and not worry about messing up the image.

Like I said before, setting and names are important(beyond the story), and shouldn't just be tossed away in hard-to-find bookshelves.

Here's what I've got so far. Feel free to update it as you see fitting :)

I can't upload the PSD though since it's >3mb... So if you'd like, just scribble them on the image itself and I can apply them to the PSD.

Also, confirmation of the ?'s labels would be nice as well.

edit: Updated the map a bit
edit2: Updated again

-Area left of Castle was known as Delta Island, but I would call it just Delta now.
-I think what you have labeled as "Big City" was supposed to be named "New Big City" which is stupid, actually the whole island is stupid.
-Ninji Castle is correct, forest below it is named Ninja Forest I think.
-Bottom left island of the map which Ziplock made is known as "The End of the World" I think. (Rather have him confirm this or just not include it)
-Snow Town was named "Sylphia" in GTA
-Nearornor Town, Neorenor whatever it is not totally sure iss more known by "Onett".
-Kull's Fortress= Kull's Castle

There was also areas hidden from the main overworld
-Silmaria (Old Graal)
-Turk Town (Or Village?)
-Sunken Big City
-Golden Realm/Golden Land, might want to label the gate below Brother's House "Golden Gate"

I forget if the mountain with waterfall was named anything in GTA, but it was around Sardon's Tower before so maybe it's a completely different mountain.

Aye, just figured that out and put it in the update :)

I just remember it as Big City. And indeed, it is a very stupid island, and doubly stupid name. I just wasn't sure if that was actually it(since I haven't really seen Big City since WAY back on pre-GTA).

Thanks, and my old copies of the overworld say Dark Forest. This may have been changed in the newer versions(like current).

Really? My GTA copy just says Snow Town... after checking again, some signs say Snow Town, some say Sylphia. Sylphia sounds more official, however.

Actually, Neororner and Onett were originally two seperate towns. Nearorner was the northern one, and Onett was the southern one on the cliffs. However, they seemed to have been merged, which make sense as they were very small and very close.

Says Fortress in my versions.

I was gonna label the Golden Gate. Thanks for the time :)
I'll make these changes later.

I am, however, going off old versions I have on my computer and not the current server. If anyone wants to confirm/correct anything that may be different than what's currently there, go right ahead :)

Rufus 06-04-2009 01:28 PM

"NE Expansion" lol.

Galdor 06-04-2009 02:48 PM

don't forget about that secret elven forest in the dark forest xD but they probably dont have that anymore on classic

BlackSolider 06-04-2009 03:04 PM

Actually Zip's island in the bottom left corner of the world is called "Land's End". Luda was close earlier.

Well here's the current revision. I'd also like to start naming smaller landforms such as I did with the York Peninsula and such... it just seems more... I don't know the word for it. Professional? Detailed? I just think it contributes to the setting in a positive way.

Luda 06-04-2009 04:36 PM

Arian Desert... lol

The little island at the top middle of Avalon should be named Avalon Port

MysticX2X 06-04-2009 05:09 PM

It'd be kind of nice to have the current map like that. (Sorry if that was already your idea, I just skimmed through the thread)

DarkCloud_PK 06-04-2009 05:19 PM

The desert area NE of Destiny is called Aria.
I have banished Kai many a time here.

That's not what the sign says, I checked it as I didn't know the name, on the server itself so...

DarkCloud_PK 06-04-2009 05:36 PM

the actual town there is called Aria, the desert is the Arian Desert

Ah...

Luda 06-04-2009 05:51 PM

Actually the town was called Aeria and Otherworlder's Encampment replaced it.

Don't know the specifics... but Giglamesh was involved. Also involved ripped sprites from Final Fantasy lol.

Yeah that was it, but I think they changed it a bit in "Old Graal".

BlackSolider 06-05-2009 06:47 AM

Off topic: gilgamesh is a kick ass card in the card game. Too bad its just about impossible to get.

Luda 06-05-2009 07:10 AM

What was ripped from FF? Just curious.

DustyPorViva 06-05-2009 07:19 AM

Oh... not ripped per-say, but a resize/shoddy touch-up of Kefka.

Mark Sir Link 06-05-2009 06:35 PM

you forgot to label penor lake

DarkCloud_PK 06-05-2009 07:28 PM

I honestly wish I could incorporate automapping within the custom map system, and add regions and landmarks that you could explore, and would open up landmark marker on your map when you have visited that region or landmark. Players could be awarded heras from an explorer or something for exploring x amount of places.

Brings more fun in exploring rather than having the full map available from the getgo.
