Do you customize pics1 to your needs?
Basically, do you make custom tiles from pics1 so you can make better levels? I find that any time I make a level, I end up making some sort of custom tile to fix a tile error or such, or simply using an already customized set.
Sometimes I just make minor edits to fix tile errors, sometimes I make a minor tile to fix an awkward tile combination, sometimes I edit an already existing tile a little to fill in some 'blanks', and sometimes I do full custom works to just make my level look better than it would without it. In the end, I can pull off things you just can't do with pics1, and I think my levels benefit from it(otherwise I figure my levels would look pretty ****ty). So, do you do this at all? edit: you know, I don't think it'd be a terrible idea if people posted custom tiles they use so others could benefit. |
You rarely ever see custom graphical fixes anywhere. Crono started using them, but sometimes you just can't make a decent fix :P

When I used to make levels sometimes Id end up using quite a few images to fix/change things that the tileset could not accomplish. I also had the tileset I mainly worked on customized at most times.
I used to, Wan does, as well as Crono. Hell its a thing anyone does with pics1 when they reach that level of creativity with levels. I mean if you used to be a little server scavenger like me I used to pick up some good tiles. I don't know why people just don't post their mods. And I'm not talking about like changes in the grass. |
I used them so rarely that I'll say no. I always believe that if you can't do something with pics1 then you're not trying hard enough. I can see replacing certain tiles because they're actually mistakes in the tileset, but outside of that, no.

Well I've seen Wan's tileset he uses to level and it hardly looks like pics1 anymore, heh. It's a pity though, he has saved it in the past in gif, which has compressed it pretty poor. It'd be a pain in the ass to restore it back to better quality.

The only time I've ever customized pics1 was for a server I worked on years ago, I changed a tile to have a black background, not a grass background. Would have been even better if tile layers had worked (or I knew about them ).

Wan kept telling me to do it back in 2005, however I never actually did until 2007 when I was working on classic for a short while. Rufus and I had added some water corners on cliff tiles to make a pretty little waterfall puddle in the middle of a big cliff, it was pretty nice.

I think that you are just and easy unable to create a modern playerworld (no iam not talking about era, just modern compared to 1.41 and early 2001).
Rights now the biggest problem of graal is, that you are unable to create a playerworld without a lot of effort (many gfxers, coders), this was alot of better in 1.41 and early 2001. |
I've only blacked out a few corners and added corners for things that I felt needed it.

I stated my opinion that the pics1 served with graal are no good basis for a modern playerworld, as they lack alot of tiles which need to be added manually to achieve a higher freedom for the level designer. |

The topic is "do you customize pics1", I asked the question if its possible to create a competetive pics1 using server without doing this?

I started with just doing slight modifications to tiles already on the tileset by rotating them, after some fun with this I progressed by taking print-screens of the editor and actually started making tiles to make the level look better. I always add custom tiles to anything I'm working on now!
