Salute to modern servers

Modern servers usually get a bad rep around Graal... and that's to be expected when they're always so similar to Era... but that aside, even if they look exactly like Era, I must salute those who get an overworld done. I've recently(and have tried before) started working on a modern overworld(roads and such, layout like a suburb), and I must say it is very, very hard. Classic/RPG overworlds can be accomplished, even if it doesn't look good, by simply placing some cliffs, trees and houses here and there. Of course, it does take skill to make any kind of level and overworld, but I've never realized just how complicated and hard it is to make even a slightly decent overworld for a modern server. So anyways, to any modern server that actually completes a modern overworld, I salute thee, it is a challenge.
Oh, and I still hang on to what I always post, separate yourself from the next modern server, be creative! Ya, I know, this post may have a lot of people going WTF?!?... but I just felt I criticize a lot of modern servers most of the time, and never consider the work that goes into making a nice world for such a thing.

Yeah, sadly they all end to be like Era anyways if you dont plan to start a real business simulation, lol, as all added Guns end in Gangwars and Similar stuff => Era.

Good luck, yet.

Although I see your point, most of them copy the way Era makes levels entirely for there GMap as well. :p

I've never seen a GMap that didn't have the same look as Era -- some huge town on top, then down there's a beach area and it leads to another island.

Riffling through my old plan work, I had two cities, a few other smaller towns, sub-urbs and country sides. The mountains wouldn't be much inhibited etc. As I've said before though... it failed to kick off. Once I've got some head way on Quian'Dor, I might start making it again :)

Bravo Evolved, in my opinion, was the best modern server ever.

People stopped playing after they released "kingdoms".

If someone makes another modern map, it should be like the maps in Pokemon. With the small multiple cities etc.

Well, thats what comes to mind considering I'm playing Diamond right now.

Yeah, modern servers are pretty good, idea wise. And they do require skill do to things like that, but really there's a large room for improvement.

Always room for improvement no matter what server you work on.

I appreciate this encouragement. A lot of modern servers including Atrius (I'm co-manager there) are trying to be creative, but the few loyal players we have (they sign on when nobody else is, give criticism, help find bugs, etc) tend to... disagree. The addition of a food system is constantly criticized most among the other features we've added, but we are trying to avoid being completely Era-ish.

I want to have everyone keep in mind that every Graal server has guilds, clans, gangs, whatever you want to call them. Saying no gangs is like telling GK to have no kingdoms (putting aside that the server is dying anyway), or a diplomacy game to have no countries. So the whole "no gangs" idea can't work. Period. However, gameplay features can be added aside from gangs, but since we are in fact playing an MMORPG, we have to focus on that MMO portion and increase the multiplayer features, of which the biggest one is forming together to PK.

Atrius has a moderately completed overworld but unfortunately very few insides. It took us months upon months, server startups and server failures, but we've finally got it. Unfortunately, yes, it follows the main island/small island stereotype, but we tend to isolate our jobs from the main portions of the overworld to avoid PKing issues as well as running into a noPK zone to evade death, and a small stretch of land for fishing was ideal. However, we're planning on doing some pretty innovative stuff with the second island so hopefully that makes up for it.

Once again, thanks for the encouragement and hopefully the modern servers will make a comeback and beat Era out =P

I've yet to play it. I'm buying it soon though via Steam.
