:o Dusty is making a map???

Kittah's post inspired me to try to make a whole map from scratch. I've never done this before, and I don't really touch levels at all, but I thought it'd be fun.
I made an empty 10x10 level gmap and started filling stuff in. I don't have much idea of where I'm going to go with this, but I'm going to start sketching out a rough-draft before I fill in more. The style I'm going for is simple yet appealing. This will be the same with detailing, I'm going to have crap everywhere just because it looks empty. Here's the map so far... |
just wondering, are u using the graal editor to make each level, or are u useing the terrane gen (where u make a picture of the map and it mkaes it)?
|
I use level generator. I took a 640x640 png and filled it with the green color used, and then generated the map. Level generator creates a gmap file along with your levels that you can load using loadmap file.gmap; Then I use the editor to edit the levels, where all the levels are linked like a gmap.
But if you're asking if this is generated by the level generator, no. I did all the cliffs, and well, everything, from scratch. All I had was a 10x10 field of green(look at the rest of the map). |
He, the level generator is sometimes also useful to create some kind of outline, when you have one :P
Edit: Oh yea, forgot to comment that map. Looks good so far, I really like it :] |
So going to have to hop on this bandwagon.
Pretty cool maps being made, nice  |
looks good but i got a question about the level generator what is the size for a single level? like if i wanted to make a small gmap of 10 levels 5 across 5 down what is the single size for a level :D

Map looks good. Looking forward to seeing more of it. :) |

So... a 5x5 map(which is not 10 levels :P) would be 64x5w and 64x5h canvas. |

Added enough I'd say to warrant a new post.
The top is going to be a massive cave and cliff system(going to be a lot of broken up cliffs with different heights, and caves are going to be like mazes linking the cliffs). edit: worked on the river a bit more... |

Yea i was going to say please don't leave that huge section of cliffs one layer but you know what to do :D |

I demand a massive waterfall :]

Wow, very impressive update!! I can't wait to see some of the stuff you do on this =D

No, I haven't forgot about this :)
You can't see it, but the cliff wall above the forest has about 5 or so caves scattered about, so you have to navigate the forest to get to different parts of the not-yet-done cave system on top of the cliffs. I also made this keeping in mind if I were to use it, I'd incorporate something like LttP lantern thing, where when you get into the woods it'd go dark and you'd only be able to see a small radius around you. |
Liking it so far, though I'd probably make the pathways through the forest a little more narrow. I've done something vaguely similar on my map, at least as far as the trees go. I did intend to have some obscure (as much so as possible in Graal) caves to reach in a similar vein.
Either way, the map is looking great - just fill in some more of the map with basic shapes to give us an idea :p |
Thanks :)
As for the forest, it's actually pretty close quarters, ranging from just 2 tiles(enough to just walk through) to 6 at the most, so I dunno if I'll be able to really close it off too much more. I think I might be adding paths in there, so I'll need the space. Thanks for the suggestion though. Also, as for filling out shapes, I dunno, I find the way I'm going(filling in bit by bit as I go), a lot more easier than filling in basic shapes and fixing up later. I used to use level generator to make the basic outline for me, but I spent so much time going over stuff and fixing it up I lost interest. I think though, that I'm going to be jumping from one thing to the next with this, so you'll probably see more stuff, even though I'm not finished with the last. |
Honestly, I'll be impressed when someone makes a map that's completely geographically logical.
Beyond that, it's decent, but nothing overly impressive. |
Geographically logical? You mean like, mountains only at the borders between...How do you call them in english? Plates of earth that shift and clash on each other, thus making volcanoes.
