Recommendations for Server Name

on sept 8th, my birthday, im buying a server, so i need suggestions on a name, i am making it like era, a gun server.

zokemon 08-12-2007 04:46 AM

You can always rename it...

Horrified 08-12-2007 05:23 AM

There are a hundred better things you could worry about. Like the top 10:

1) How dediacted will I be to the project?
2) How dedicated will my staff be to the project?
3) How far do I plan to go, classic/hosted wise?
4) How much work is already planned?
5) What am I capable of doing?
6) How do I plan to attract good staff to my server, when they could just simply play Era?
7) What is different about my server then Era?
8) What age group of players am I planning to serve mostly?
9) How will I get players interested, without giving away to many ideas to be stolen?
10) How do I plan to keep my staff working and getting the server ready at a good rate?

"What should I name my server?", is around #79, after "Should I give global admins a level4 RC?", and before "If the staff can breath and talk at the same time, does that make them a good applicant?"

Bottom line: it doesn't matter. :(

I think it sort of matters. I am often more attracted to check out a server if it has a good name. A server named Playerworld## really turns me off and I almost never check those out.

Eh, my server is still a playerworld##

but really, it's better to wait until you know EXACTLY whats going on and have crap down before you go changing it 11242830948 times, because you never knew what the hell the server was a bout in the first place. :P

zokemon 08-12-2007 08:28 AM

This is true.

Do you even got a concept besides
"Liek era z0mg?"
I think you should have SOME ideas of your own before you try and air a server

Twinny 08-12-2007 12:29 PM

Make your server before you buy it ^^. When (If I can) buy a server, I intend to have a basic outline off all gmaps and graphics for references with all relevant scripting done. I'll upload to server and bam! It'd be ready for hosting before I even really started.

Why would you buy a server without knowing whats going to happen in it? I wrote a 7 page bible about Niromia before I bought it.

But to be on topic, I agree with Zokemon. The name really gives your server a better appeal to people. When your coming up with a name, try to avoid combining two words together to make a new one. That type of thing makes it seem very uncreative. A classic way to get a good server name is to make a name for the main body of land in your server (or maybe in your case the name of the city) and name the server after that. For example, if the name of the main city in the game is "Graal City", you could name the server "Graal City Gangs". That example was a little bland, but it would accurately reflect the kind of server you are making. :)

There aren't enough good staff to go around Graal, much less scripters. We really don't need anymore servers.

Is "Mythic Legends" uncreative?

A lot of people just buy a server just to have a server. They don't even have one idea what so ever of what they are going to make other then possibly a theme.

Knightmare1 08-12-2007 04:27 PM

i know about the damn gmap and stuff, i have a blaint idea of the tileset im working on, alot of graphics, and of course, i can script. ive seen so many servers where they get scripters to do all the work, and they just sit around and do nothing.

Knightmare1 08-12-2007 04:28 PM

and by the way, "Mythic Legends" is a great name. and the only one ive gotten today.

More like "there aren't enough good ideas to pass off as a server anymore...We don't need anymore ZOMG GUNSS!!! servers."

If you can make a different idea, and actually think it could be a winner, why the hell not? But if you're going for the same 3 popular recycled ideas (classic, guns, rpg), then just don't buy a server.

Door 08-13-2007 06:42 AM

You might want to try to describe what you have in mind for the server. It's a little hard to come up with a fitting name without any idea how it will be. And try not to use phrases like "similar to Era" because then we'll automatically think "Era" and it might 'lead' our thoughts away from other ideas for names.

Tell us about the kind of culture you would like to portray in the server, how you would like people to react to it when they hear just the name, which sort of graal player you would like to attract--if you do want it to be similar to Era, then maybe you should ask the players of that server in particular what sort of server name they'd like.

Give me some feedback based on my post, and I'll try to come up with a few names you can throw into the pot of ideas ;)

What's funny, to me, is not that Mythic Legends is taken already, but that it does not fit at all with a gun server in any way, shape, or form.

This guy is obviously like 12 or 13.

Knightmare1 08-13-2007 07:20 AM

......my age has nothing to do with you....... (by the way, im 13) and i said it was CREATIVE just like he asked.

you know, age really shouldn't matter as long as he could manage the playerworld maturely. He obviously can't.

What's even funnier, is if you look at the threads in "Playerworlds Main Forum", and it seems...

Inspiration 08-13-2007 07:32 AM

Age is almost always directly related to ability to a certain point. With age comes experience, and a ton of maturity and rational, especially between the ages of 12 and 18.

If I reflect on who I was and what I was capable of 8 years ago, there's no way I could undertake a project like a server. Hell, I barely could now.

Age simply matters in this case because he has no clue whatsoever how to manage anything, plan a project, and hold together a team. He's never even had a real life job.

Eh, I guess I agree.

But there are tons of 14 year olds I've seen on graal that do things I could never do development-wise. And talk a lot older then they are, so it's more of a mental age then an actual age.

The problem I find is much more in how to actually plan and execute over the ability to develop content. A kid could be a talented artist or coder easy.

It also lies within the problem of power being in their hands for the first time, and they're usually not ready to handle it, having a lack of real life experience with such.

I'm starting to really like you. You make very intelligent and thought out posts a lot of the time and I can't agree anymore with what you are saying here. Remind me to rep you if I forget :P

Not so much. I had a very good idea for a modern-style server that was unique. It even had some RPish elements to go in with the modern theme, also many of the gameplay elements were taken from one of my favorite games; an MMOFPS called Planetside.

If I had the resources I could have taken it far, but like I said, there aren't enough good staff on Graal that aren't already occupied.

I had full confidence that my server could have gone Gold like Zone.
