My first noobish attempt to making a level

First id like to say that i have respect to the level makers who are really talented in making levels.
This is my first time making a level, so please don't go hard on me, I really have no idea if there are tile errors, but i am almost positive there are. there should be since its my first time trying to make a level.

The idea behind my level was a old fashioned, save the princess level outside of a evil castle....
pretty lame idea i know, but it brings u back to the old days.

I need feedback on how to improve my tiling and so on.

on the little castle, i tried to have a gate on it, don't know if it worked out as it should lol.
the woman behind the bars it actually the princess..in the level she asks for helpp..
If you cant view it properly, tell me how i can make it possible for u to look at it correctly i uploaded trough imageshack.

Green=Has potiental but needs improvement

i give this a 4.5/10 :D if you want help with suggested tiles let me know and i will post them for ya

For a first try I've seen worse. What you really should do first, before anything, is find a good detailing style and a good path style. Then learn how to do trees, because you will end up using them a lot.

Next work on beaches and stuff to become comfortable with tiles. By then you should already have a path style which you will use for beaches.

Cliffs are the more challenging ones, but again path styles affect your cliffs too.

Kenshin thanks for the feedback, i like the way you coloured the things that need my attention.

thanks gerami for the feedback.
in the current tileset it really takes ages to find the correct tiles for each corner or direction your heading to lol.
on this level i spend like alot of hours today.
anyway, good to know uve seen worse for a first attempt:P

Trust me, after more practice you will get used to it.

DutchGuy 07-15-2007 09:57 PM

thank u, i will try to make some more levels during the week to practice.

DutchGuy, one thing that really strikes me (other then the path) are the trees. Crono posted a nice little help image for connecting trees here and I posted an example level in the same thread here, I think they'll come in use. The perspective on the castle looks a little odd, especially with the gate, maybe you should try to using some regular houses before you build up to the experimental stuff. Most LAT I know still find it hard to design housing *cough*Crono*cough* so it's not that bad.

Nice first level, it's not that bad, although it is a tad eccentric.

Very very creative, I like your ideas! Keep it up, with tiling experience you'll be able to pull of some kewl stuff...

Learn to walk, then run. Start print-screening and editing the tiles in paint and implement them, I'll be looking forward to seein' some of ya stuff in the future.

Don't give in!!

you mean overcolor the tiles in paint using print screen?
what kind of effect does it have on the screen then?
will it mess up my tileset??

and yes ive seen better castles ofcourse haha.
thnx rufus maybe ill focus on making smaller things for now..like outside houses and inside houses before creating aw hole level..
though i saw something weird happening with the tiling. in the castle..like the first row of blocks is going just fine, but as soon as u get higher with the rocks...it seems they are overlapping eachother automaticcly(dunno how u spell it) its something i couldnt fix

also where you see the sign highlighted, its like a little puzzle you need to solve before the gates open.
It should be scripted, but since my scripting knowledge is 0% that was just something i had in mind using. its pretty simple and you can look at it through the screenshot.
Basicly the idea is, each number stands for a letter.
example: A=1....B=2 etc.etc...
its pretty simple.
