First RPG Sprite

This here is the first RPG sprite, that I have ever fully completed. It has gone through so many transformations and mass updates in one day it's unbelievable. But I think it's come out quite well.

Give me clues, hints, and tips.

Well, I can't say the shading looks all that great, but it's a start?

Certainly looks 16-bit RPG-ish, at least. The hair could probably use a little more detail, as it seems sort of flat the way it is now, and it'll be interesting to see if you can incorporate that sprite into animation, since most RPG characters don't stand still all the time. (Unless of course, your only job is to say "Welcome to Corneria")

It seems like the body is leaning to the left a little, I think you should move the hair over a pixel to the right, and find a new shading method. That looks "spherical" and pillow-shaded. I'd also lengthen the legs a little or cut the torso/arms down to size. Kind of has the anatomy of a gorilla right now.

I was working on an animation, had some eye blinks down nicely.

Also, tried to fix the hair flatness issue. It's quite hard to dither in such a small space to work with. :(

As well as shifted the head to the right some to balance it out more.

E: Attacked the issue of sprite proportions as per Dusty's recommendation, there's some things I've got to show you btw.

This is just a quick edit, but maybe something like this?

Quick update before I head to the bookstore. Also, Shawn in your edit...what's the deal with the shirt? >_>

Butz 05-15-2007 10:51 PM

It has a wrinkle in it, shirts do not hang down perfectly straight, though I suppose at a small size, it's harder to see.

You gave him boobs!

As for what you said earlier, dithering in small sprites=bad. There just isn't enough space to make the dither do what it's supposed to, you'd be better off just choosing closer shades.

What a little sicko :(

Not quite, but since you assumed it anyway...

i dont like the hair style itself but butz's last one (apart from the manboobs) looks awesome.

yours just needs some shading here and there and a wrinkly shirt

Actually, the last one I posted was supposed to be a girl, hence the smaller arms, and longer hair.

This was sort of fun though. Should do some sort of collab where one person posts a basic sprite, and people keep modifying and adding onto it until it ends up as something either awesome or ridiculous. Possibly something a little larger though.
