Black/White screen: Take 2

I used to play Graal all the time.. like literally a year ago, perhaps a year and a half. But i moved on to WoW at some point to join some friends and its been fun, but sometimes i just need a break and i missed the old school Graal. I installed everything and got my old account and password n everything, PERFECT WOOT! And then... Dun dun dun... So to get to the point...

I have the same problem as a guy from a thread below... i think.
When i try to log onto Grall the graal screen goes white OR black, it alternates, and then after oh... 15 seconds it gives me a message that reads "The connection could not be established" Now, i know i have the internet cause... well im here arent i? and i know my account is working and i used the correct username and password. My firewall asked me when i first tried to connect if i wanted to allow it, and i clicked "yes, save this answer" but still nothing. Now... i saw something about like 100 something ports you can open... but am i seriously going to have to sit there and manually open 100 something ports???
Thanks in advance... i opened a ticker at cyberjour or however its spelled and got no response whatsoever, so anybody got an idea?
Oh and i have windows XP

You are using the default Windows firewall? There are some firewalls / anti-virus programs which silently block programs that have been updated or reinstalled. The best is then to check in the configuration of the firewall / anti-virus program if there is Graal listed somewhere, and then remove it (so that it will ask when you start Graal again) or change the options there directly.
I don't know of other reasons why the connection shouldn't work since you can access the forums without problems.

I'm using the AVG firewall. I tried disabling the windows firewall entirely and still nothing, also i checked the programs listing in the AVG configuration and Graal is set to Allow. Also tried disabling both so i had zero firewalls running and it still didnt work T_T

Hmmm you are directly connected to the internet or are you behind a NAT / home network ?

Errr, well im in college on a dorm internet on my laptop. Im plugged into the wall, a LAN i believe. Im guessing this complicates things?

It also sometimes gives you a white screen if something with DirectDraw is wrong if I am right. Well at least it happens to me sometimes after getting some DirectDraw errors.

Hmm, What is directdraw again? It shouldnt have anything to do with connecting to graal though huh?

Well the offline mode is working right?
It is possible that your college is blocking most ports, in that case you could ask the network administrators to allow some ports.

Done

Ah... i guess that is possible they are blocking it but i dont think i could get these tech guys to open them up... it's next to impossible just to get these ba- fatherless people.... on the phone.
And yes the offline mode is working just peachy so that must be the case.
Well thanks for your time, good day. *bows*
