Graal-based house

1 Attachment(s)
So I figure I'd try my hand at redoing pics1, instead of creating my own tileset. It's a lot more challenging than I had thought because you basicly have to work with in the contraints of the original designer.
Anyways, this is the house I started, and as of now I have no idea where to go with it... I just can't think of a way to smoothly round off the corners of the roof tiles.

Foreigner 03-27-2007 03:49 AM

It's quite nice if your going for a classic or Asia oriented themed server.

If you were going for the "Clean and Simple" look, you got it right on the money.
Depending on the other graphics of your playerworld and if they match, it could be a masterpiece or a piece of ****.

Its very nice though, I like it anyways.

DustyPorViva 03-27-2007 03:52 AM

Ya, I wanted to recreate pics1, as in really give it a classic look. So much in fact, that any classic playerworld would be able to use the tileset and not look screwed up.

Thanks for the compliment, by the way.

I dunno... I don't like your wall so far - seems more like a partition wall on a property than that you might find on a building.

Switch 03-27-2007 04:07 AM

Try making the straws that go || go up until the edge where it starts going // or \\ k thanks :)

It's okay :) nice and simple, but I don't really like the walls. :(

Im pretty sure he isn't fully finished with his piece, that is why I did not comment on it. Well I hope he is not finished anyways :D

DustyPorViva 03-27-2007 04:15 AM

Well that's the problem with the roof, I'm trying to work with the available tiles in pic1, and I'm not sure I could pull off the tiles turning outwards in the little space there.

EDIT: well I looked up some references and saw that the south tiles never turn at the corners of the roof, but come off a seperator. I'll see what I can do with that.

killerogue 03-27-2007 04:15 AM

It's looking really nice Dusty. The only gripe I have is the wave the shingles on the side of the house are at an angle.

Rather I think you should make them so that they point toward the roof rather than near the back of it.

Also I have another suggestion. The shadows the || lines (haha muco funer than shingles :)) make aren't really "colorful", like the darker bricks in the tile have the same color shadow as the lihter ones... These smiley face things Stephen and I do are fun!!!!! XD

Changes I've made so far. Don't mind the big bare spot on the corners of the roof, I plan to fill those in some how with something aesthetic. I don't know what I'm going to do with the wall, I'm out of ideas for anything else. I never figured they'd be too big of a problem 'cause they'll mainly be covered by windows.

killerogue 03-27-2007 05:01 AM

Yep, loving the sides now. :]

Foreigner 03-27-2007 05:15 AM

That gorgeous.

Mmm, I dunno. The back is looking a bit iffy around the corners. :o

DARKVILLIN 03-27-2007 07:28 AM

change the door frame now :D. add possible shading to corners to show depth?

DustyPorViva 03-27-2007 07:42 AM

Ya, getting to the doorframe, though it's a bit of a stumper. I planned to do shading last because right now I'm just mirroring as I make changes, if I apply shading I'd have to redo the shading everytime I make a change to one side and mirror it.

I don't really like the frame... but meh, I did it so may as well show it.

killerogue 03-27-2007 08:13 AM

I love it except for the one highlight shade at the top which could lose some contrast. Other then that looking good bro.

Crono 03-27-2007 10:44 AM

something about the wall clashing with the roof...

Elk 03-27-2007 11:38 AM

Looks pretty ok

Well doesn't look like my plan will work out. Pics1 leaves no room for personalizing. It doesn't originally have seperate tiles for left and right sides of the roof, so if I even wanted to make a new house the left and right would have to be something that looks good on both sides. I might be able to stuff the stuff inside there somehow, but it won't have the same effect I wanted, of just being able to apply the tileset and give you nice, new, graphics for a current world.

Started working on other parts of the tileset, like the cliffs. Pain... and I don't really like them, but ah well. Guess I'll dedicate this thread to redoing pics1.
If someone could rename the thread to "Remaking pics1", that'd be great.

Looks good in-game.

smirt362 03-29-2007 03:36 AM

Use the other layout of tileset then.

DustyPorViva 03-29-2007 03:41 AM

I didn't really want to do that, trying to keep it within the limits of pic1 kind of keeps me on track with it.

Zideruic 03-29-2007 04:43 AM

The cliffs seen repetitive to a point...but i think if the plateaued part was changed it'd look better.

DustyPorViva 03-29-2007 06:39 AM

And some shiny stuff. Doesn't really fit in the with pics1 topic, but I don't want to create another thread for these. Anyways, I figure it goes with making a classic-type tileset.

Luda 03-29-2007 06:50 AM

thats so awesome :)

ChaosTika 03-29-2007 01:54 PM

Icons looks good..

Tom 03-29-2007 06:40 PM

dude your seriously an awesome artist, wayyy better then me :D Love those icons and cliffs, besides the repetative tiles on the cliff, still looks hot.

cbk1994 03-30-2007 12:13 AM

Nice rupees, kills the classic ones by far!

DustyPorViva 03-30-2007 12:42 AM

Thanks, and the major turn off to those cliffs were how repetitive they were. But I figured when actually made in a level instead of just straight cliffs, it'd break the repetitive tiling.

Wow.

Not sure about these, but I'll work on them.
I'm abandoning fitting stuff into pics1. The limit is way too much, at least for me to fit any I'd like. The only kind of fences I'd be able to make were big bulky round/square ones. But I'm still going to use pics1 as a template, and base everything off the tiles in there to keep to a 'classic' style.
