You asked if it could be used.... Well, not in that format it can't. There is no way for Graal (or most any game for that matter) to cut out the frame to use. Since you have them at an angle and so close together.
Easiest way to aviod this is to make sure that with your sprite layout, you can use the mouse select box to cut each image individually. (without including any other frames)

For better looking animation? Eight won't suffice for jack. Even the classic Graal sword has 16 directions.
Bomy Island swords have 32 directions. :]
Here's an example of frame layout. Technically most swords only need 16 directions but the other 16 shown here are including swinging the object 360 degrees... So if the object is not a mirror image of itself, you'd need those other directions. Like an axe would have a large blade on one side and no blade (or a smaller blade) on the other side. If you swing the axe in one direction the big end of the blade would be the attacking side... but without the reversed direction, the little blade/no blade would be the attacking side, so that wouldn't work. :p
