Log Housen

I miss the old house tiles...but I recognize they had to be removed...
yet I still hate the new brick houses...
So I made new house bits. Fits nicely into the lava house roof (addtiledef2 at 1280,64)

Should work equally well everywhere...grass, snow, dirt, water, whatever.

Wow, thanks! I'll add these to my tileset :D

I think you should make roof tiles to go along with these, as the default tiles don't really mix that well.

I like it, make more Tyhm.

Oh, I've got lots...they're just not all as Portable...

IMHO, the servers that still use the default pics1.png should form a concensus regarding what changes ought to be made to said pics1.png...I mean, we all look at the roofs and say "Wow. There's like 8 tiles that are just Red. But if I reclaim one, I have to redo every houseroof on my server...and with all the repairs I've been doing to the tileset, I may as well just make a new pics1.png for my server..."

Quick example, here's some of the other ones I hobbled together, in no particular order...tree path, cliff into shallow water (for when you don't want to surround your ENTIRE continent in beach), the back of a cathedral (only works as an NPC...didn't feel like making different tiles for On Grass, On Mountain, etc), Seaweed (replaces the Snow tallgrass, or possibly lava tallgrass) for when you want the swamp to actually blend all the way with the watery bits instead of having that barrier of grass in the middle...swamps should be swampy, right?

The rest are fairly pedestrian..."Statue without grass, so you can put it on dirt too, lolz", likewise the stakes and so forth...

I'm not a big fan of that church-top, although everything else looks nice :D

Here's the church-top I'm using for VS:C'

A trick I'm using to save tilespace for my tileset (and add more variety) is to seperate the house windows and turn them into graphics. Then you have extra space for new wall tiles, and you can have a million different window designs in all sorts of colors sizes and place them however you want on the walls.

I also join the npc window graphics to a "windows" class that allows for having lights shine through the windows at night.

Also if you're going to do just recolors of existing roof tiles or other tiles, it's almost better to just make them into seperate tile pieces and addtiledef them over top of the defaults... Like instead of having a red roof and blue roof and yellow roof in the tileset that are all the same shape/style... just have a red roof and if you want a different color, make them in a seperate graphic and then just have it tile over the red roof tiles. :)

Of course you're going to run into the problem of "what if I want multiple color roof tiles in one level?"... then it's best to have at least two sets of roof tiles in your tileset. (I use red and blue) This way you can have at least two different colors in each level if needed.

I want to see these in action, has anyone worked with them yet?

A couple buildings from Hubworld. I made a few that use the stretches of wall without windows in it (Kai's idea's pretty good, just have it all be blank wall and use NPCs for windows, I just haven't bothered yet)...

Infernix 01-19-2007 11:09 PM

If thats how to tiles really are used I dont like them much.

Tyhm 01-20-2007 01:42 AM

*shrugs*
That's the tradeoff, if you round 'em out you have to accept some Background, in which case you need a different Edge Tile for grass, dirt, snow, drygrass, shallow-water, against-a-mountain...and if you go crazy-detailed, you wind up with tiles that are more NPCs than tiles (the Skull House and Grass Hut can't be stretched above 1 floor...nor can the cathedral be easily reconfigured into anything but a cathedral).
But by all means, if you prefer the original brick, go with that.

Infernix 01-20-2007 02:25 AM

I dont know it seemed like you were trying to create a log house out of it and it seemed really flat to me. Just like a bench of circles everywhere.

Tyhm 01-20-2007 05:47 AM

It's a fair point; there isn't even an effort at differentiating the house wall from say, a raft. Then again, how are the current housetiles any different? They curve in at the bottom, that's about it...

Ducati_Link 01-24-2007 05:04 AM

Old Zhalla church top Wan :D

I like those cliff/water, swamp/water and tree tiles though.
We have a lot of these type of tiles on our N-Pulse set. It's alot easier than using images for everything. We have quite a collection now :)
