can someone teach me to GFX

i would like to GFX so if you would like to help plz do

warp2ukew 10-03-2006 02:19 AM

I am sure someone will direct to a few good tutorials, but I think that it is hard to teach someone else to make graphics. You need to be able to understand the tutorials and make them on your own, keep practicing, and eventually you will see improvement.

I am speaking from experience, but not with GFX, I found some good level tutorials.

Personally I don't believe you can be TAUGHT. Start off looking at others work and find a good mentor. Someone you could go to and get some opinions and ask what should be fixed and someone that will give you an examples if you know a friend or some good guys. The people I looked to for advice were Alarid, Skrobo, Draenin, DonaldShimoda, and quite a few others. :]

Draenin 10-03-2006 03:08 AM

First of all, you'll need to get practice. You'll learn techniques along the way.

For a bit of practice right now, try spriting some type of fruit.

I've actually been wondering about anti-aliasing lately.. I think its the next step i'll have to take to keep improving.

Could you give us some insight into why that anti-aliasing tut is bogus?

smirt362 10-03-2006 05:57 AM

Its not bogus. I just feel like it doesnt look as good...and I dont think it works on graal anyways.

Especially since in most cases you will only be able to anti-alias inside the graphic so you can keep a defined edge on the outside.
Usually any small improvement in the quality from single-side anti-aliasing isn't worth the effort though.

Zideruic 10-03-2006 06:29 AM

I taught myself...but hten again I suck so you might want to find a mentor.

SayianOozaru 10-03-2006 06:37 AM

I taught myself how to do Graphics. I just opened a couple of Zone weapons (the blue rifle mainly) and kept re-drawing the image until I realized why there was shading in some places, and why things where done the way they were. I think I turned out alright.

And after a year and a half, this is what I'm able to accomplish. :)

that lightning/beam thingy is amazing, about learning to gfx,I just look @ how tom and elk do theirs

smirt362 10-03-2006 10:31 AM

Start out with simple 3d shapes and think about where a light source would cast its shadow.

Elk 10-03-2006 07:05 PM

Ill kill you if you ask that again in a post
Well I wont kill you but I will sure make a thread with a bold 1000 size font saying "YOU CANT BE TAUGHT GFXin!"

Yeah you can, you can teach yourself through practice. People obviously aren't born with super kewl GFX behind their belts.

That's a damn lie.

Em 10-03-2006 08:20 PM

Can you draw well with a pencil? Alright good.
Just treat the pencil tool as an actual pencil, and away you go!
For the first couple weeks/months your creations might suck, but after awhile you get a feeling for where to put what.

Just decide on what you want to make and work at it until it looks alright, and then move on to another thing and do the same. In a couple weeks come back to the first thing you made and remake it. You'll be surprised at the improvement.

Elk 10-03-2006 08:29 PM

mouse and pencil is different
but you are right in some parts

You can teach people to draw, graphic, etc... however you can't teach them to be creative, only show them how to learn. That's my opinion, atleast.

Elk 10-03-2006 09:01 PM

true
but you need to be talented to be taught
and by teaching, i mean giving advices atleast

Em 10-03-2006 09:39 PM

The mouse and the pencil are both alike and different. Each offers a very different approach to the challenge of translating your idea from mind to paper. Both mediums are attempting to solve the same problem, and use similar basic tool sets. If you can use one, you can likely learn to use the other.

Ya he must be a teacher... Cause you just got schooled! :p

Lame jokes aside..

I'm not gonna say I'm even past the beginner point, but I personally edited heads as my first pixel work. Its a frowned upon practice I know (I didn't know at the time actually..) but it got me looking at the way the heads were shaded while I recolored them, and later tried to add changes that still fit with the whole style.

If I were a teacher.. it would be a very sad day for Graal, and the world.
I'm just someone who's been trying to make pixel graphics for the past couple months.. Il post some of my stuff once I get on my design computer later.

zephirot 10-03-2006 10:42 PM

I've never understood why people on the internet have this tendency for pointing out irrelevant and outdated grammar mistakes. Obviously they aren’t stupid, so they can’t possibly believe it makes them seem intelligent. And of course, being intelligent people, they will realize that it proves nothing. So I guess that leaves only one logical explanation; they must have nothing better to say. As the saying goes, if you’ve nothing important to say, there's no need for you to speak.

Looks nice, but you need to add a 'round/curved' outline to the rocks (like you did at the palmtree) to indicate that they're rounded, also your outline shows way too much, try loosening the contrast, looks really nice though :)

He's mocking somebody's English skills, yet he doesn't seem to present his own in a much higher level, so as the saying goes, "don't throw rocks if you live in a glasshouse".

Mmm yah, I lowered the contrast in the revised version, but unfortunately i'm not at home so I couldn't upload it.

I wanted the rocks to seem as if they are coming out of the ground.. Need to work at it some more.

If you get to know Elk, you'll start to throw mud too. Either that or question your sexuality (Curt?)

lancelot9 10-04-2006 05:28 AM
