Idea for a playerworld, wondering if it seems viable..?
I had a new idea for a server that will be set in the classic/medieval age, and utilize fantasy aspects as well. I would be kidding myself and everyone else if I said I had any of the Development skills to create a server, but I would not mind funding one or handling the administration side of things,
Setting- This server is a Medieval server with many aspects, most importantly magic and spells. It is a largely unexplored and unsettled world with the exception of one main island and a few outlying settlements and tribal villages. There are no guns, cars, land mines, x-ray goggles, or anything of that nature.
Weapons/Battling- Typical weapons include swords, daggers, spears, and maces as melee weapons with bows and arrows, crossbows, and javelins being used for ranged attacks. Spells can include attack spells, defense spells, healing spells, and spells that alter the environment slightly. Weapons and spells will be loosely tied to a players class/specialty.
Classes/Specialties- Rather than having a rigid class structure (mages get certain spells, fighters and thieves get certain weapons, etc.) this server will have its players based more loosely on their chosen class and job specialty, and allow players to change this over time without having to completely reset their account and start over. Their initially chosen class and job specialty will give them bonuses in certain aspects of gameplay, but they will still be able to use the other weapons and spells, and through studying and training can switch classes and get better at other aspects of the game.
Economy- The economy will be largely controlled by the players, as it will be up to them to gather resources, create basic and advanced items, and set the prices for these items. Staff will oversee everything to make sure that things don’t get out of hand and that the economy remains fair and balanced, but generally prices for things will not be decided on by the staff.
The Overworld- All players will start on a main island with a few cities as well as several places to gather resources and battle with both each other and NPC enemies. The main island will provide all the means necessary for players to gather all of the game’s resources, craft weapons, and purchase their own apartments to store items and money in. There will be a separate island for events that will be detached from the over world and will also feature a Spar/PK arena. The rest of the over world, as referenced before, will be largely uninhabited save a few small settlements and NPC tribes.
Towns/Cities- Rather than having an entire server filled with pre-built cities, this server will allow players with enough resources to venture out from the main island and create towns, cities, and even nations of their own. They will be able to apply resources such as stone and lumber to create buildings, use food that they harvest or catch to feed their members, and craft weapons and tools with metal. Initially the buildings will have default insides that have been predetermined by the staff, but as towns and nations become more established (certain number of time or active players, perhaps) custom levels can be uploaded. In order to prevent everyone from having their own nation and town to themselves, their will be certain guidelines that must be attained (5-10 players for village, 15+ for nation, X amount of resources, etc.) before a new village or nation can be created.
Role Playing- I believe that the player-controlled economy, loose class system, and custom cities and nations will allow for a more free-form RP experience, rather than having the players told which nations they can join and who is at war with whom and which classes get which weapons right from the start. The staff will be there every step of the way to make sure that everything is balanced, host fun events , and introduce special Role Playing events from time to time. They will also be there to expand the Overworld as necessary to accommodate newly formed nations, as well as update the current Overworld and city levels to keep things from getting old and boring. I would like to know if this seems to others to be a viable idea for a playerworld, because as stated before I lack any sort of real development talent, but have no problem funding such a project if it truly can work and has a dedicated team of staff. Funding would include both the initial purchase of the server, any necessary webspace (website, forums, etc.) as well as the subsequent yearly renewal as long as the server is active/heading on the right track. Any feedback is much appreciated.
Thanks, Outlaw
