"User is typing"

1 Attachment(s)
I've come up with an easy display for RC to show if the user is typing, not typing or idle for a certain ammount of time.

As you can see in the file I've attached - if the user is typing a message their display image is blue, while if they're not typing it's orange. This could be used further to display the their status - if they haven't typed for more than 10 minutes, for example, their display image would turn charcoal.

I think it's a fairly nice improvement.

I think something like this might be better on the playerlist. If I send two hundred messages to RC, that leaves the RC with two hundred icons to update whenever I do anything. At least if the icons are on the playerlist, it only has one icon to update per user.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that it will only update the last message you send :)

So if it goes like this

.Stephen: Hi, guys.
.Skyld:
We love you, Stephen.
.Stephen: Yes, I know Skyld.
.Galdor: I'm swedish o.o
.Skyld: Sometimes, when no one is looking, I like to cross my eyes.
.Stephen: Oh... kay.

Forgive the spacing, for this example there's nothing I can do about it ):

What's the benefit of this?

Future Improvements should be for the game, not for chatting needs on RemoteControl.

Go work on Kingdoms.

RC is part of the game.

Zomg, I didn't know that!

Though, this feature seems a bit "useless" to add. I guess it's useful, but how would it benefit GraalOnline? The feature doesn't make the game a lot better, unless those who chat on RemoteControl all the time. Zzz.

Yea, but this is something that isn't necessary. RC is for development of the game. Sorry ZH, but it's turning RC into an AOL chat. :frown:

I agree.

ApothiX 06-20-2006 12:32 AM

I think this would be better suited for use a status bar, ie: "Stephen is typing a message.." The icon thing seems a bit odd if it's only appearing on your last sent message.

Not all improvements are huge steps, some are just little bumps :)

Crono 06-20-2006 02:03 AM

I don't want bubbles next to everyname.

I don't see how such a feature is a "little bump" for improvement.

It's not benefitting GraalOnline, it's just a suggestion of personal perference. I guess that is what a future improvement is in general, though, how about some suggestions of future improvement towards the game rather than a chat option?

Crono 06-20-2006 06:27 AM

Gawd Mal, stop taking it so harshly. It's just an RC function suggestion. Not like it's gonna cost graal 39048209 rupees ZOMG SCAMT :[

This could also be used as a way to see if people are active on RC or idling. It would be better to have some kind of indication than to have to go 'Malinko, are you there?' and if not, disconnect you only to have you log back on three seconds later cusses a flyin' because you were working on a script for three hours and didn't press the 'send' button.

Draenin 06-20-2006 09:03 PM

I think it'd be neat. You could catch people by surprise and be like, "Ha! You were going to say something! Now out with it, or we'll kill this adorable fluffy little kitty."

However, my RC idling days would be numbered. :frown:

I NEVER IDLE, OKIESMOKIE. :):)

There's a good idea for development! Automatic draft savings! SEE, NOW THAT, YES THAT, IS A GOOD IDEA.

End.

LIES, YOU ARE ALWAYS EATING HAMBURGERS AND GETTING YOUR ROBITICALLY-ENGINEERED COUNTERPART TO TAKE YOUR POSITION ON RC!

I am on to you, Malinko.

Noo, what if your cat accidentally jumps on your keyboard and erases your script, but you have to spend 20 minutes chasing your cat around because he has your mouse in his mouth (harhar) and when you get back the draft saved over your work and erased your entire script.

Then...erm...whine like Excalibur about his account idea?!

haunter 06-21-2006 06:08 AM

How about getting a functioning RC client out there for the paying Mac, and Linux customers first? :)

excaliber7388 06-21-2006 04:02 PM

Other than the fact that I agree with haunter.....
I do like this idea, but it should also detect if the user is on graal, and moving, or all input is coming from another program or game. That way you could tell if they are really active. If they havn't moved for a while not in game, or on RC, then maybe just display (Inactive) behind their nick in the RC chat. Or make it an option to use bubbles instead

Linux users are already lucky enough to have a completely functional RC.

Stefan said that he would attempt to statically link up the new Mac RC in roughly two weeks, since the test version that I have requires files that are not available on my system. I think we can safely say there'll be one soon enough.

Why thank you. You've been a fine example of such responses yourself, especially, for example, in the graphics forums!

I think my posts in the graphics forums were even more remarkable than Cronos.

The same can be said about yours back in the levels forums!

NOWAY!

Draenin 06-22-2006 03:41 AM

I could possibly see downsides to this, though. What if away messages popped up while you were away that told everyone else what you're doing?

- Crono is Away: Editing Levels
- Zero Hour is Away: Taking Pictures and Generally Doing Canadian Things
- Malinko is Away: Ketchup-Spattered Knife
- ApothiX is Away: Scripting Stuff
- Yen is Away: Fap Fap Fap
- Draenin is Away: Mad Science

We'd never know the wiser!
