Teaching Spells?

I was just reading (for a class, I'm don't read this stuff for fun) about the Trobriand tribe of Papua New Guinea, and I had a pretty nifty idea that will almost certainly never be implemented!

How about a system where players can teach other players spells? As opposed to the boring old "sit around and spawn spells for hours until I hit the spell I want/need". It could do some neat things like introduce useless items into the economy, for example, pearls could be used as a sort of "medium" item that you need to place down for the spell to be casted or something, sort of like dias with prepping. It could increase RP, in terms of within kingdoms, high level mages can take younger mages on as apprentices and work with them and teach them the spells they need to be helpful to the kingdom.

It could also use cauldrons and certain items, a scroll perhaps to make it work, etc. Just could be a fun way to increase the popularity of mages on kingdoms and increase the RP a bit.

Yes, I like that idea! It sounds fun.

I like that idea, a lot.

If the server is ever reset, it would be excellent if certain levels of magic made you gain specific spells if you gained the level by killing specific monsters... Then people would learn lots of new and different spells, and would have to interact with one another to get them all.

That'd be awesome.

Back when I was working on RP Kingdoms, GP had me make up a whole new list of spells.

22 Pages worth.

Would be awesome, but don't hold your breath. I like the idea too, I just don't like having to use items to cast spells. That's a quick drain on resources.

Sorry I didn't mean it like that so much, I more meant you need the items to learn the spell, then you could access as it as if you learned it the old way.

That's what I thought you meant.

Gain a certain item that is needed to "teach" the spell, then it vanishes when you "teach" someone else the spell. The item IS NOT needed to cast the spell, only to "teach" it.

Great idea. And as the supporter of RP i am, i will place my vote on yes for this. Especially if i get to be some sort of high shaman teaching people spells.

If something like this happens, I would love it. The next thing we need to do is fix the getting hit while casting a spell and getting stuck their till the spell gani wears off. If I am casting a spell, and someone hits me right as I cast it I have to wait for the time of casting to finish before I can move again. If you are hit, it should cancel the spell and let you move right after that.

Not to mention the person can get like 10 or so hits on you before you can actually move again :\

BUMP
this seemed like such a popular idea, figured id see if anybody is interested in it actually happening?

(Sorry, thread necromancer here)

It'd be nice if rune magic was added. And no, I don't mean /cast fire rune and then some Japanese, red colored letter appears flashing in chalk on the ground.

I mean you have to have, in example:

Dust of pearl, you then go through a... 'rune book' and pick out one or a couple (no more than 5, probably) runes. This would be an advanced form of magic, and would give a lot of creativity.

Such as, the rune for the north star would give the direction of this spell, then, a rune of lightning would give it its destructive nature, and then add that with a rune of a creature, and then perhaps the rune of a fish.

This would create a Lightning Golem that would attack the northern most settlement of Zormite :)

Eternal Darkness style? I dunno...would be a huge project I'm sure. Could certainly be fun though.

The teaching of spells would basicly replace the spell books from shops
(can still be bought there but doesn't appear often, while teaching requires someone knowing the spell teaching it, and you would need some item/money to make the teaching work) ?

Or would just majorly cut down on the buying of spells. Well, I suppose that it'd be good if some spells still showed up. Or if you could learn greater versions of spells as you learned them. Example, lets say you kill 10 T-Rexs with small fireball. Then, you learn medium fireball. And so on.

Yes, you would need some sort of items to teach the spells, would end up being kind of like alchemy only you cast on a person instead of a cauldron.
