Lag Cap limit

the amount of time people are lagging themselves is ****ing annoying. Please, make this stop with a cap limit that will make people be kicked from the server if they lag too much.

I was just sparring on NPulse, and the guy wasn't seen moving, but was hitting me. It didnt matter if I checked or unchecked UDP, and it was him. everyone is doing this, and it needs to stop. Put a cap limit on the lag. This is ****ing stupid.

Chris 01-23-2006 02:57 AM

Modem tapping sucks. I feel you, dude. :frown:

Curt1zzle 01-23-2006 03:43 AM

A lag cap would be nice, similar to many FPS games that kick high ping users...

Zeltino 01-23-2006 05:04 AM

No, that's a bad idea. I use satelite and my lag is horrible. And I'm going to be kicked from the game now? I can't get anything better than satelite, and now the idea is to kick people who lag like me? Granted, the people who modem tap SHOULD be kicked, but not everyone who lags is modem tapping. =/.

If your connection speed isn't sufficient to play an mmorpg such as graal online, you should not be playing the game.

No effense, but lag ruins the game for many players. For instance, a level designed for sparring events could contain 20 players and the source of unusual game delay; lag could be a 20:1 ratio. However, I am not saying the amount of lag from players in one precise location doesn't add up. Designing a system for eliminating outstanding lag ratios could be a start.

For the user(s) who could, or do take this post effensively; disagree with the post. Contact your ISP provider to possibly upgrade your service, fix your connection.

Googi 01-23-2006 06:22 AM

I use DSL but lag pretty badly somehow.

Rick 01-23-2006 06:24 AM

Don't kick lagging players. Simply don't spar with them: problem solved.

Matman58 01-23-2006 06:34 AM

When I do lag check it says 150ms and never changes. I don't appear to lag but i believe 150 is bad isn'tit because on CS and stuff I pull a ping of like 20 or so.

pacMASTA 01-23-2006 07:14 AM

Whynot let it be a variable and just have a script for certain levels like all ET evens if your over 200-300ms you will be warped out.

Spark910 01-23-2006 01:34 PM

Instead maybe some sort of pink in a players profile, so you can see before hand if they may lag or not - to decide if you want to spar them.

How can I not spar them in a tourament when I draw them?

Now, something to tell me how laggy they are would also solve the problem of people having "Lag Trainers" which make them have fake delay, much like Johnnywelsh's trainer. This would let places like NPulse disqualify players who go over a limit, and that would be fair - although I'm unsure if staff are smart enough to to do so.

But something needs to be done. Sparring is basically people warping all over the arena and swinging to hopfully get hits - it isn't sparring anymore, and it's ruining the reason I still play Graal.

Zeltino 01-24-2006 03:02 PM

I lag horribly, and because of that, I don't spar. I know I have bad lag, so I don't spar, or even go into a spar level for that matter. I bet most people you spar that lag know it, and use it as an advantage. But you can't just rid Graal from everyone who lags, because it's NOT everyone who lags doing that.

And Coder:
I have satelite. It's the best connection I can get where I live. As soon as they run Cable out here, I'll be sure to get it, but there's nothing to "fix" with my connection. =/. I've even contacted my ISP provider and they said nothing could be done to speed up the connection.

I'm not complainging about natural laggers. I'm complainging about the amount of people who lag themselves so that they win spars but delaying by 3 seconds and you have to triple guess their movements ahead of time to hit them - and even then, they warp around, making it almost impossible. It needs to stop. You don't spar, as you said, so if we had some sort of way to kick people from spars, or PK arenas, a certain script we could use to boot people out would be excellent, and it would deeply improve the sparring and pking communities.

Doodeedoo..
There should be a built-in 'ping()' function that returns the player's ping.

People playing with DSL should be banned. PERIOD.
DSL isn't mean't for gaming. It drops packets like god-knows-what and has a tendency of simply stopping all together at random.
If you have a choice between DSL and dial up, you'll find that dial up will actually let you play with less lag.

I think the time a player can be out-of-contact with the server, before it disconnects them, should be lowered. :/

And again, I can't stress enough: DO NOT PLAY ANY ONLINE GAMES WITH DSL

I play with DSL, and I don't experience ANY problems. And yet, when I try using AOL at my friend's house, I experience a lot more lag problems.

Did you think before you posted that message? I really don't think you did; none of it is true.

Its the AOL program totally destroying the performance, not the connection speed.

Okay, in that case, I will have to test it on my friend's NetZero connection.

I still don't believe that DSL makes you that much laggier, though. Maybe it'd be a good idea for someone to bring up some actual proof.

I really don't care about DSL and the like. I want people who lag on purpose to be kicked from sparring. That was the purpose of this thread. It wasn't so that you could compare dial-up and DSL.

AOL runs programs in the backround that can lag you more. I'm unsure of NetZero. Plus, you're not taking into consideration the fact that some peoples computers will be better, some locations will be better, etc.

Anyways, I ping command in profile or, whatever (Something that udates so you can actually see if they are lagging to much) and having them kicked would make this game a thousand times better.

OasaTor_PK 01-26-2006 05:31 AM

I can only think of how bad my connection is, They run a cable connection out to a tower. That tower broadcasts the internet connection out to people. Luckily, I am one of the 3 people on the tower, so we share a 4MB/s connection split out to 1MB Down/1Mb Up, but it is sent wirelessly across about 7KMs :]

Just imagine how much I lose from it.

D4rKv310c1ty 01-26-2006 12:32 PM

You realise the AOL program when installed comes with yummy spyware and viruses. So tell your friends parents they're idiots.

Also DSL is fine, maybe you should see what sorta RAM your friend is using?

The new G4 Engine with the scripts and stuff takes up alot of Random Access Memory so you may iswell check you got enough RAM.

PS: If your DSL connection is acting like a 56k on drugs then check your adapter is working properly.

Wormx2 01-31-2006 11:36 PM

I guess this won't be implamented.

Goodjob Graal.

spydrct02 02-18-2006 06:23 PM

I assume all of you with these delay problems either live in the USA, or the people you're fighting against (that is, sparring or PKing) live in the USA. I've found that distance seems to be affecting the lag between you and the server. I've suggested a time or two that Graal should have a USA server/mirror, though I get the impression that anyone in charge is really seeing delay/lag as a problem some reason. Graal is a real-time fighting game, so why not have a server that delivers to "everyone" (or rather, everyone outside the UK) in real time instead of, say, 150-300ms late?

With more and more people getting firewalls and cable connections with routers, not everyone can use UDP anymore, and usually the delay between two people (if they both have broadband) without UDP on (UDP checked) is the time it takes to reach the server and back. However, if both people have UDP unchecked, there is no lag unless one of you really does have a slow connection.

Matman58 said he gets 20ms ping on CS, but he gets 150ms on Graal -- it sounds like he lives in the USA, and if so, we're seeing typical results from someone in the USA to Graal - which I'm pretty sure is located in the UK. Or maybe it's in France?

So in short, the answer is you're likely not the person lagging, it's just the server isn't sending data as fast over a long distance compared to a short distance -- and what a difference in ping that is (UK people get 20-30ms ping, USA people get 115-250+ms).

As for the cap, virtually everyone would be getting kicked off constantly for having a constant high ping, not because they're lagging, but because the server is ("lagging") getting their data late. N-Pulse was having a vote to kick people "that lag" out of the spar tournaments - not the best kind of thing to vote on when the server (distance factor) itself is the cause. Likewise with the cap, everybody would be getting kicked out. Before anything like this gets considered, Graal would need a server that doesn't limit our connection to it's own.

I was actually thinking about that while reading this thread; so I like this idea. but maybe if their lag is 200-300ms consistantly because there ARE lag spikes.
