V4 editor?

I was wandering when they were going to come out with the V4 editor. Any idea how soon that will be?

Benm00t 09-08-2005 03:26 PM

If you mean an editor for Gscript2, I heard that there wont be one.

There will be scripted online-level editor and script editor. We made good progress with that but it's not finished yet.

Stefan, it would be wise to also keep a offline option open for developers.
e.g my internet is down alot or i'm on a plane. I cannot use internet so I cannot develope.

Ontop of that only being able to correctly develope online is a unheard of concept. You also take the option away for people to improve their so called skills due to the simple fact that they cannot practice but are forced to work on a server to be able to learn. This will basicly be the end of graal as a development game cause talented scripts, coders and other "already talented" people will work on servers and no new talents will be born :)

(Ontop of all that, I hate being online on a server. People always manage to bother you with idiotic stuff and especialy when your staff. I know cause I do it myself 9 out of 10 times or i'm a victim of it :P)

Edit:
It would be so.. cruel to cut people off from the kick ass particle system :O and leaving them with simple showimg's ^^

I don't like the whole online aspect of developing either, but it's been decided that online is the way to go for some reason.

Online Editor will be a piece of **** =), Especially for me i travel too much to have an stable internet so my dev time will shrink to 5% of what it was when i could work on my laptop at airport, hotel, and plane. Also their's most likely going to be a huge glitch with the online dev and all servers will go down lol.

Graal's development will stagnate if online editing is mainstream and offline editing is not improved. There needs to be a fully-functional offline editor for new people to become comfortable with, or there needs to be some sort of server free for VIP/Gold members to connect to with their clients to test/improve with. Graal already has a lack of adequate developers, and making it impossible for people to improve without getting hired first is a bad idea. Also, how will people be able to be hired if they can't show examples of work?

A way to simulate an NPC server offline would be nice. The "online" editing tools would work with it too.

Spiker 09-09-2005 12:19 AM

see, what i would like are the things to edit levels online and offline, so like a server side kind of thing to see how it works, but only you have it, like, its a playerworld for your only use, so you can tase server side stuff :O

I could imagine that online level editing could be quite interesting, you open a window for creating a map, type the width and height, and then you are directly warped there and can start modifying the tiles and adding npcs, and other people can help you.

I think online editing is a great idea (it will certainly be fun!), but I also think that there should still be updated, offline options for people wishing to learn as most people start off fairly bad at development and then improve by posting their developments in the forums sections for judgement.

There is no doubt that online editing will be a very nice addition to Graal, but offline options should also be available.

Both don't hurt xP.

Indeed, online editing will be a fun aspect. But you would have to concider limitations when it comes to direct script imputting and related issues. Alot of simple scripts could mean sudden death to a npc server or even the whole server slot (there's enough to abuse ^^ )

So limiting certain actions so they can only be preformed by those who are registered as a "admin" e.g admin=acc,acc... in server options and making it impossible for people who aren't listed to use commands such as copylevel,deletelevel,sendtorc/nc,getplayer and maby other ideas people have. (This will probely immadiatly give someone a reason to flame me with stuff such as, If a server hires staff they should trust him ect) but if you allow online editing there's no direct way of controling your staff as a manager, admin ect. So there should be safeguards.

Ontop of that, no one will be able to practice scripting withouth accidently harming a server. Nor will you directly get so called tallented lats any more that also create their own effects and such cause they simply have never practiced scripting and you'd have to find people that are already confident with other scripting languages possibly torque. Than they would still need to learn gscript. (I mean someone who's new to graal and has never scripting any kind of thing would have to read tutorials and just accept that what they say makes sence withouth testing his own theories) Anyhow... i'm talking to much :\

*goes back to headbanging on dumb The Streets songs* Your fit but you know it.... :spam:

I'll stick to the editor, but It would be a nice feature for fixing tile errors :D
