Phoenix Signature

1 Attachment(s)
Well I needed a signature for this forum and my favorite legendary creature is the phoenix, so I created an image based on it. Any comments/suggestions are appreciated :)

As a little background, I created this image based on a reference and did it completely in pixelation, my preferred style of drawing. Took about 4 hours total.

Kaimetsu 03-16-2005 03:17 AM

It's pretty nice. The shoulders look a little strange, like the head doesn't line up with the wings or something, but it's still a cool picture. However...

The size is within the rules, but I don't personally think anybody should have that large a signature.

Scott 03-16-2005 03:19 AM

Well, I'll tell you what I love first. The torso, wings, and the extended tails. Neck seems rather choppy, smoothen it out perhaps? Eye looks completely out of place, perhaps just try white eye? The tail is too bold and the shapes are ugly looking. Smoothen them out just by taking a white pencil tool and going over the edges in a nice curve. Nice to see somone here who prefers this style of drawing finally. Mind showing the reference picture?

Tail is ugly...
Those dangly things are really ugly
The file is very tall...

I like it though [:

fexii 03-16-2005 03:24 AM

All right well I think I'll just chop of the tails... they're a very nice addition but perhaps its usage is outweighed by the size of the image. I'm fixing up the shoulders and neck as of now. The eye is meant to be that way, perhaps you are viewing it a different way than i am? Here is the reference i used http://www.wuzware.com/artwork/phoenix.jpg

UPDATE: Various edits as seen in signature.

maximus_asinus 03-16-2005 03:36 AM

It might just be me but if you block out the wings, does it look like a fish?

Thanks for the careful observation haha. I agree the tail is too bushy though, I'll sort that out as well.

UPDATE: Fixed up tail. Any other peace of mind anybody wants to take out on my bird? =D

it looks good for something that took you 4 hours, and i like costomized sighnatures

Well just to side-track a bit, I love your sig too. Commander Keen was one of the most fun games ever, and the level in your sig was my favorite level too. It sure brings back memories =D Now I'm downloading the game so I can play it again lol.

It looks nice.

Drawing it exactly as the image appeared didn't turn out so well, but thanks to the comments I received here I think it's become much more suitable. I'm still open for any suggestions ^^

It's an amazing piece of work, but It'd look better with a black background, like in the thumbnail.

fexii 03-16-2005 10:44 PM

I think it's fine on a white background. It's meant to be a light picture, if it was on a black background it would add so much contrast that it would take away from the effect of the phoenix going into the sky.

BlueDevil 03-16-2005 11:22 PM

o hahaah i didnt see that, i just googled phoenix :)

xxCloudxx 03-16-2005 11:42 PM

Pretty darn hot if you ask me.

Hiro 03-17-2005 02:48 AM

Change the tail more. I don't like it very much-needs to be thinner in my opinion. The rest is very good though, although as Scott said, I still think the eye is off a bit.

fexii 03-17-2005 04:16 AM

Hm well I still think the eye is not so bad, so I'll choose to leave it that way. As for the tail, if i made it too thin it will deform the overall shape of the phoenix. I don't want it to be completely straight either. If you can convince me that making the tail thinner than it is now will not leave me with a firey stick, i'll gladly update it ^^

Scott 03-17-2005 07:56 AM

I liked the tail thingies. You ruined something nice. The neck is fixed, very cool. Wings, fine. Torso needs some shape instead of a perfect oval type thing.

fexii 03-17-2005 07:58 AM

I agree, if I had touched up the tails with a bit of anti-aliasing and flow I'm sure they'd be a great addition to the picture. The real problem with that is the size of the picture becomes too large to be suitable for this forum... so sadly I had to ditch the tails in order to keep the whole bird on here. ah well. As for the elliptical shape of the body, i think it makes it look more streamline ^^ did it bother you a lot when you first looked at the picture?

You could remake it as a 24-Bit PNG, that could be nice [;

Splke 03-18-2005 11:23 AM

I wanna see those tail thingies ;-;

fexii 03-18-2005 09:18 PM

lol well a poor version of those tail thingys is still in the first post on this thread... but since i ditched the tails anyway i never really improved upon it >_<

The physical memory size of the image doesn't become too big, it's the dimensions of the image. They're within bounds but they overwhelm the post, so it's better to keep the image size smaller

Yes, if you recollect I already mentioned it being too tall. I'm not really concerned about the data size, which is rather clear since I mentioned 24-Bit PNG... I would just like to see the detail :P

Unpredlctable 03-19-2005 08:01 AM

Looks awesome :O.
I really like it.

if i wanted more detail it wouldn't have to be in a png, a gif is more than enough. but then again pixel art isn't as easy as just adding detail with a brush :whatever: it was tedious enough just doin what i have right now :)
