Tiling project interest?
Over the past couple of weeks I've had a somewhat nasty urge to start something. Something big. Having thought about it and having browsed the Playerworld Staff Openings section without much interest in any of the existing Playerworlds that seem to be hiring (Except of course for End of Ages, but they're not looking for tilers, sadly) I decided I could only go about making my own project.
Now, I know by asking around for interest here in the "Playerworlds Main" forum, it would automatically be labelled as a Playerworld, but at the moment I'm just having thoughts on making a large series of levels for the simple pleasure of doing so, whether or not it evolves into a playerworld remains to be seen. I don't want to get ahead of myself or anything here. Pacing it slowly is the way to go or interest will be lost. Now, onto the main topic. Basically, I'm thinking of putting together a large series of levels (size is as of yet undecided, as I want input and to see if others are interested) in a pleasing and realistic manner. I'm talking about geographically realistic (or at least as much so as you could be with the Graal "engine") and pleasing to the eye. So many servers out there are a strange jumble of levels you'd only see in a fantasy world. This isn't a bad thing. Indeed, far from it, it offers an opportunity to enjoy a setting completely foreign to our everyday lives. All I'm saying is that I'd like to see a setting with more thought put into the arrangement of objects on the map, all arranged in a semi-realistic way and all being well made and eye-pleasing levels. Of course, now you get to the quests and storyline part and this is the reason why I don't want to describe it as a playerworld. For the moment I'll be putting together the beginnings of it myself if interest is generated. If enough interested is generated that people would like to help out as a fun project (read: fun project, there will be no server bought and no staff rights as of yet, though it's a definite possibility in the future if this beginning is a success) then it may well turn into a Playerworld project, and I do hope to see that in the future of this project. For now though, I guess I'm just testing the waters to see if anyone is interested in the idea. I think if it does end up as a Playerworld project this is a good way to go about it. Build the quests and storyline around the levels rather than building the levels around a fanciful storyline. So... hit me with feedback. Try and knock me down with it, I dare ya ;) |
You should still apply to End of Ages
;) If you make a level useing our tileset that knocks our socks off, you can still be hired :P We just need a graphics person, and a scripter more than a level maker. Good luck with your project if you do it :) |
As Everworld's full manager, I feel I now need to throw in my hat.
I am curious, if, while reading the Playerworld Openings Board, if you came across the Everworld Design Document? I have a theory that the number of people who've actually read that is less than 10. In hindsight, I should have named the topic differently, because it was also an introduction topic to the playerworld, not just hiring. |

I spent a good part of the day at work yesterday with nothing to do, so I decided I'd try my hand at draftin a map. To that end, I've drawn out a map I quite like the look and feel of, so I'm starting work on the levels themselves in the near future as I find the time. If anyone wants to know more about what I'm up to and wants to help out, either send me a PM here or email me at [email protected] |
