GScript Contest! Ends Sept. 8!!
-Taken from other thread to ensure people actually look here-
This will be a specific contest in that there will be only one type of script accepted. There are options for different skill levels just to be more fair-ish. Anyway, here are the details; You must create a script to render a rope or string type object. You can use showpoly, showtext, showimages, and all that kind of stuff however you like, aslong as the script does actually render a rope-like object. Entrants for the Easy Level just need to figure out a way to create, draw and drag the object. Entrants for the Intermediate Level need to emulate inertia in the rope to simulate whip-like effects. Entrants for the Advanced Level must incorporate the option for multiple weights attatched to the rope (affecting the inertia and movement of the rope). Extra functions and visuals can be added and depending on niftyness and efficiency of code, this could help to add cool points to your script. The methods you use to render, and operate the rope is up to you, be creative! As of yet, I'm thinking I should accept entries for the duration of a week. So send the script via PM to Dach;GoZelda;ZeroTrack;calum (<- put that in the send to box) and USE CODE TAGS!! (I would prefer you using [ php] since it has the fewest obnoxious extra spaces). If your script won't fit within one PM or you do not have forum access, send me an e-mail @ [email protected] I will send it to the other judges via PM or email (if they will allow the scripts to be sent to their e-mail). We won't accept any more entries after Wednesday, September 8 (unless extreme circumstances occur). We will try to have the results back soon thereafter. Note: I will be out of town this weekend (yes, very bad timing on my part...) so please try to not rely on me sending your application to the other judges at that time. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I am fairly confident it won't affect the judging time much. sorry for the extra thread, I was told making a new thread with a catchy title would ensure that more people actually read this :\ |
It is actually difficult to emulate decent rope physics, and unless you have studied to Further Mathematics level (In the UK), you gonna struggle to even attempt the intermediate level, and if you've not studied A-Level mathematics or Physics you wont have a chance (Unless you've done personal studies).
I'm currently toying with the idea of elasticity, which does make it somewhat different, but I'm not aiming to be finished before the closing date set. (More of a personal challenge). In my personal opinion, I dont think this was the best choice for a challenge as it requires certain areas of mathematics to have been studied, which I know many people wont have. Thats not to take anything away from the ichallenge idea in general though... |

It is supposed to be a challenge. But yeah, there will be less demanding challenges in the future. |
I would change the wording a little bit. The begining/Intermediate/advanced scripter part is a little inaccurate. I'm considered an advanced scripter by some people but I'm taking my first course in physics this year. I would not be able to emulate the required effects due to my limitations. I don't really have the free time to do this anyway because school is giving me 2-4 hours of homework per day + I am doing stuff with friends all this weekend. Best of luck to the contestants. If you need more judging I might be able to put in time for that.

Yeah, if anything comes up concerning the judging, I'll be contacting you and some others (ex: someone like Kai sending a complex script that's over someone's head :asleep: || if for whatever reason we get too many applicants and can't judge them all in a decent time). |
Elasticity means you have to cater for a whole new set of dynamics, And actually makes the finished result rather diferent, thats what I was refering to.
Jagen is a perfect example of why i did not think the challenge was perfect: A more than good scripter who has simply not studied the relevant mathematics. |

GScript1 only?
|
Probably, since most people doesn't have access to somewhere they can work with GScript2.

Also, I'm going to be out of town this weekend, and away from an internet connection from half an hour from now til sometime monday. So try to get you applications to the other judges aswell (unless I'm the only one you can get contact with). This shouldn't affect anything save for the results not being in til a few days after submissions are closed, so no worries. I'll see if I can check in sometime over the weekend, but I'm staying with some friends so I wouldn't count on it  . |
Well, it's the 8th, there are 7 hours left to send in your submissions. Try for the easy level if you can't think of any decent inertia methods atleast.

I still havent received any enteries
|
Maybe you should extend the date?
I just heard about it today o_o |

Is there a prize?

Yea I think were gonna extend the date , what do you guys think?

Other than that, I will be doing something that doesn't seem so daunting next time. |
It isn't about daunting, I just didn't hear about it in time.

How about your soul?!?!?!?! |
To late ;o

I think its an interesting contest but since it requires some knowledge about rope physics it would be good to also add some links to sites where you can learn about those physics, and eventually put a little example script.

oh yeah, examples of which I can post now. I probably could have mentioned the couple of methods I've used for displaying and handling the rope, but I ended up being too lazy to do that :\ . Well, anyway here are some examples of what I've done (too lazy to add multiple weights, not to mention doing that and/or adding anchor points is quite difficult). The whip is old, like 2 years ago old (hence the use of polar vectors), the other stuff was all made in the past month. None of it is really all that accurate physics wise, but the effects aren't too bad.

All the contest is a really good idea, I think the contest exists to learn, since when you are forced to make something that you think youre not ready to do you learn alot. Objectives make you smart =) So about physics or math problems that anyone can have to make it, you can also pm me... if I can help in something I will be happy to help you.. ^^

i guess sence im judging this , if your gonna enter i'd be glad to help as well, just remember this doesnt mean im gonna script it for you
