Graal, the Addiction.

Anyone ever step back and think, "Wow, graal sucks horribly, yet somehow, I can't bring myself to quit playing it. Regardless of the fact that its a waste of my time and money and is a major source of stress in my life, I still log in every day and zone out and don't snap out of it till the clock reads 6am the next morning."?

Surely someone else has noticed this phenomenon?

URBANLEGEND 05-23-2004 01:44 PM

Wrong. Cause i just don't even play any kind of game.

I personaly think the reason why you get back on graal, its cause when you quit well you have been playing over year and after 3 or 5 day you don't know what to do on your computer .... you look at your desktop and you say, to yourself, i'll go on graal and see what changed. There you continu playing cause it make you do something.

I have uninstalled graal, and it always seems to reappear. XD I have a million awesome games, they don't help. My addiction is hardcore, I mean damn, I'm actually in the (Graal Addict) guild. XD

Crono 05-23-2004 02:37 PM

I used to be addicted but then I realized that this game freaking BLOWS. Then I remembered that I can still improve on my levels skills and become a better developer for graal so thats what keeps me here. Helping people out with levels and talking to my friends on Val/Delt :D

Loriel 05-23-2004 03:25 PM

It helps to run on an architecture that Graal does not support.

Googi 05-23-2004 04:37 PM

No, I don't think Graal sucks horribly.

Skyerus 05-23-2004 05:01 PM

I feel the sameway, it's hard for me to quit Graal. I've tried a lot of times, the longest I haven't played Graal was for about a month when I installed GunBound.

WanDaMan 05-23-2004 05:05 PM

I do leave graal for a while, I hardley ever play graal, it's more of these forums what I find addictive :p

Yeah same. But sometimes when I get on I see my friends so I kind of stay in game. Other than that Graal is extremely boring today. in 2001-2002 it was so freaking fun and addictive for me. I was a half newbie so I still had that aim to become staff, enjoyed graal families (real ones, you know houses etc) and making my newbie levels XD!

Today it's just not the same. People change etc. :[

Tyhm 05-23-2004 06:38 PM

Hi, my name is Tim
(Hi Tim!)
And I'm a Graalcoholic

;)

LegendaryTsukasa 05-23-2004 07:31 PM

Yes I have. Everyday I think that. Yet I still play.

The problem is, I cannot find any awsome game to take over Graal. Really sucks.

GTXOO 05-23-2004 08:02 PM

Seeing how ALL of these servers have lack up updates.

I think so.
I don't even play graal, I just log on to see updates, which is never.
It is horrible.
When I come back from vacation im resubscribing that the a game that I cannot say in these forums. Because that was the only fun game I actually liked.

But graal can be fun if some servers would release or come back.

ZONE for example, never came back.

GoZelda 05-23-2004 08:09 PM

Graal is addictive, but I don't play terribly long and often switch a game of Graal for a game of Warcraft 3

Same here, i like to play Graal alot. I don't feel good playing sometimes, wich is another history. :)

Dach 05-23-2004 08:57 PM

GK has some crippling gameplay flaws, yet I still play... I find that playing some good console games inbetween keeps me in a good mood so it's not so bad

Loriel 05-23-2004 09:23 PM

The channel topic in #graal used to be Graalians Anonymous for quite a while :\

WanDaMan 05-23-2004 10:13 PM

I just bought 2 new games for the xbox, which where I have completed 1 allready O.o
THUG (Tony hawks)
+
Colin Mcray :p

That's what I do when I get bored, but today I went on a bike ride, i got bored.. :o
I don't know, if I get bored I play graal, but when I get bored of graal I do other stuff, it's wierd.

teshy2 05-23-2004 10:44 PM

Once I found out there are online games other than Graal out there, I stopped playing and never came back. No regrets.

Myukoi 05-23-2004 10:59 PM

No. :p (And the forums are even worst, damn 10.)

Brad 05-23-2004 11:13 PM

not too hard to stop playing

Googi 05-23-2004 11:24 PM

Koni wrote an "ode" about this.

What the heck?
It's time for a reality check,
You play this game so much,
that your life is a wreck.

Do you hear the sound that Gralat's make?
What's it going to take?
To stop you from playing Graal,
so that you'll give it a break.

Your teeth start to grind,
you can't get online,
so you moan and you whine,
just to craft, dig, and mine.

You have all the hats?
Do you want a pat on the back?
Well Congrats,
'cause I got all of mine from corrupt NATs.

Whoops there goes a cheater,
although he could be much 1337er,
if he played in front of traffic,
and stuck his head inside a heater.

Wow, a new quest is out,
let's all scream and shout,
so we can beat it in 3 minutes,
then get pissed off and pout.

There goes a staff member,
as he plays with npcs,
lets get our moneys worth,
watching him run on top of trees.

There's a new playerworld,
I think I'll give it a whirl,
I log on just to get banned,
by some guy dressed up like a girl.

Here comes some pkers,
bragging of skills that they lack,
oh no you stopped to read a pm,
then get stabbed in the back.

In the midst of roleplaying,
or in the middle of a theft,
You'll get a message asking,
"Want 2 b my gf?"

You'll spend hours tapping D,
crafting, fishing, baking,
just to blow it on some items,
that aren't even worth taking.

Come play Graal,
Where all the girls are guys,
Corruption, hate, and lies,
is what keeps this game alive.

You know he has pretty much given up on Oasis. I offered to send him money via paypal to get re-upgraded and he refused. :\

Cheers to him. He probably has gained some form of sanity.

Thallen 05-24-2004 12:15 AM

I don't think Graal "sucks".
I have to play Graal, I like it's style and it's the only game that can really run smoothly (sometimes) on my computer.

Kappa00p2p 05-24-2004 12:46 AM

I just like to develop things on graal and thats what made me start and what keeps me here.

DeFord 05-24-2004 03:44 AM

I left about 6 months ago, taking some time to finish my Junior year (last day tomarrow! no finals :D) and apply myself to my work, but I still log onto my server's RC and script a bit to keep my scripting in somewhat O.K. order, and log on val every once in a while to catch up on old times. Jesse's my friend, and I don;t mean to insult him, but I miss old val, back in the time when I first started in July of 2000 (Genelite/Virtue time). Anyway, I've pretty much quit, I just need my fix every now and then ;)

WHIPENIE4 05-24-2004 07:10 AM

wow. I never thught i could quit graal really but now its been like 3 weeks and i'm glad .once i stopped playing my computer and ****, i mean, its been great, I've done more things with friends now and I mean, its great, first it was gp why i stayed, then GC, now i quit GC, I have nothing else to interest me in this game and ****, i say try it. just let your computer cool down for a week and you will not miss it a bit if you actually have friends and can talk to people.

Nothing.
(So Crono, why are you here in this server?)
I killed an AZN with a mohawk down the street yelling newb :(!

AlkarenHyralt 05-24-2004 06:47 PM

Graal is easy to quit when you realize a few things that more than likely i would get yelled at by 'others' were I to start talking about them.

ETD 05-24-2004 08:30 PM

The best way to quit is to slowly cut off ties within graal. Because I really doubt you are addicted to the game itself, but more the people, and events within the game. If you really want to quit, then you need to quit any staff jobs you have, leave any and all guilds, and slowly break relations with friends... (ones that you only talk about graal stuff too...) Delete the actual game, and go outside for the first time in ages...

then you will see that there is nothing making you play graal... you may feel the need to re-download it, go on a PKing spree, then delete it again... but at least you won't be addicted
:P
I used to be addicted, then I realized how to manage the addiction... once I made myself realize that there is no need to be on graal every day, and talk to people online about graal all the time... things were made much easier.

A lot of people are also addicted to the power of being staff on an online game. They see it as somehow being "better" or "higher" than the common player, which is where they go wrong in the first place.

Brad 05-25-2004 12:35 AM

milk graal for all that it is worth

CHA CHING .

Heh, that's pretty kickass.

I won't say I'm addicted to graal. I'll say that i honestly have nothing better to do with my time.
Although with that said, i don't spend a hell of a lot of time on graal - the only server i play is GK, and in the 8 or so months of playing time i've only racked up like 700 hours. I think i spend more time per day browsing these forums than playing the game, actually o_O

I'm starting to drift away from graal now though. Since it's summer, and i've started trying to get into shape after four years deforming my spine in front of a computer screen, i go outside for an hour or two a day and just kick a football about, its fun doing kickups once you can do more than 5 XD
The only problem is what to do with the other 8 hours of my day? There is honestly nothing to do elsewhere, other than either go into town with my few remaining friends and wander about for hours, not doing anything much, or read a book which, although i do like books, gets tedious and i can't seem to do it for long during the day. Walking around town is ok every weekend or two, but i couldn't possibly do it every day, it would just become so annoying. I hate big crowded places like the town, filled with idiots, pikeys and shoppers who i'd probably disagree with on everything if i ever conversed with any of them. Walking through crowds just makes me sneer and writhe inside at the...nastyness of a big swarm of mindless people, going places for no real reason. Crazy o_O
Anyway, hopping off that tangent, yeah. I go out and play little football matches (SOCCER for you dumbasses who think that a game where you use your hands to move the ball should be called "Football") every once in a while, that'll probably be once or twice a week once the weather gets permanently nice and our exams finish next month. But yeah, I'm still in fairly bad shape and after a few of them my legs get real achey and stuff, so i sometimes have to say no =/
I also tried getting a gf, because its been so long, and it woulda given me something to do and someone to spend time with too, but that fell on its ass, from a great height, so no such luck getting away from my computer there.

*****, i've typed so damned much and im not even lying on the couch yet, i really shoulda been revising for this useless religious education test tomorrow but getting stuff off my chest is funner.

Anyway, yeah, anyone got any good ways of spending time outside, getting away from the computer screen and such? Do share plz XD

Oh yeah that's what else i was going to type. Back on the topic of graal in specifics, i'll probably not bother to reupgrade my account in september. I think i should really quit playing this silly game, considering what it's done to my life, my brain and my spine. Also i'll be doing A levels next year, and i probably wont even have time for this game. ^^

Tyhm 05-25-2004 01:41 AM

Graal's like solitaire. It's always there. You can become dependant on it or not, but it's always there. It's not some soulsucking machine designed to steal your childhood from you, it's something to do during commercials and reruns when your friends are otherwise occupied and someone borrowed your car. Yes, it's always better to go out and live life when you can, but when you're committed to a night in, may as well be social about it.

Splke 05-25-2004 09:11 AM

As did the aiming system on the sniper rifle, and to a lesser extent, the minigun (god that gun was fun once i'd gotten it. i remember team mates that were new going "HOLY CRAP WTF IS THAT THING" o_O)
