Tree Image

Hey guys if you look back a few posts you'll see i mentioned that I'm a scripter but I'm working on graphics. Well the tree is one of the harder graphics to make in my opinion because of all the detail, shaping and texture and i noticed that not many people on this forum have done it. I decided to take a shot at it anyway ^^

I did the entire tree in MS Paint and used my knowledge of dithering and coloring and whatnot... did it all without any tutorials or picture guides. It's one of my first Graal graphics. Took me three hours I didn't realize graphics and pixeling and dithering were so tedious! Anyway, comments would be nice thanks :)

you have the right idea, but it still looks a bit abstract. my sugestion is to sit and stare at a tree for an hour and find every fine detail you can think of, and then work off that.

The best way to do a tree is to work in layers (if you have a 'shop' program. if you don't, the go somewhere else).

You start with the trunk, and branches.

then you add minor branches onto those branches.

then you add yet more minor branches onto those branches.

rince and repeat untill your branches look detailed enough.

then put layers inbetween all those, and add leaves here and there, not not absolutly everywhere.

the end result is a very detailed tree, as there is alot in a tree needed to be detailed.

detail never really was my strong point. I'm definately going to use your suggestion though, thanks :D it seems like a very useful strategy that is much more organized than the mashed way i created the tree

seeing your tree, you do have some perception of detail. rember, although some people are lucky enough to be born perceptive, to draw, you have to train your eyes to see, not just reaconize what you see.

what that means is you can just look at something and regester what it is, and some fine details about it, or you can look at something and take in only the details, not the emediate registration. one's brain often fills in what you see with mental associations about the object.

don't worry if that sounds wierd, just keep looking at trees and you'll see it.

as for the orginizing the objects, when making a graphic of something, it is important to reaconize the dominant shapes and details, what overlaps, etc, and draw it accoordingly. Using the wonderfull layers that programs such as 'jasc paint shop pro' and 'adobe photoshop' provide is a superb way of organizing your graphics untill you come to your final composition. you'll find that it'll making graphics will go alot quicker if you use layers.

Good luck with your art :)

sorry to double post but, well I decided I would show you the tree I made today, in paint. all in paint. Im not trying to show him up, but I decided maybe he would understand the shape, and form better, tho mine is pretty bad =(

Thanks MrGannondorf your comments are so helpful =D there's obviously something that i'm missing that you can see, so i guess i'm going to have to take your advice and go do some tree-watching.

marcoR is a little less helpful but a comment is a comment lol. your tree is very nice too i just dont have the same style lighting as you do. i like the leaves though, they have good and detailed stems.

It's fine :D Tough comments are just as good, I didn't ask for anybody to be nice. As long as it's helpful and I think I'm going to take from your leaves anyway so you were helpful to me too thanks.

marcoR 08-09-2003 06:07 AM

aight =)

MrGannondorf 08-09-2003 06:11 AM

nice tree, macro.

you can use paint if you like, but its easier with something thats capable of layers. I've found that paint isn't good for much anything other than bitmaping wich is my least favorit style of cg arts, although some people can do it good enough that it doesn't suck.

you can't be harsh on faenix, because he's still learning. you had to, too at one time. though granted, he's doing pretty well.

as for faenix, I'm glad to hear that I made sence. its gratifying when people find what I have to say to be helpfull :)

MrGannondorf 08-09-2003 06:12 AM

oh, and MrCharls, you need too look at trees some more. even at the base of the branches, there are twigs and leaves. Granted, I don't think there are that many. Also, some branches branch out in the direction you are looking, and sag down below where they apear to branch out. There is not much of a definite when it comes to trees.

and I'm not sorry for double posting, lol.

all right so i'm going to add detail and make the trunk a little more realistic and we'll see how it comes out :)
