Filter the Filter?

This isn't offical or anything. I just want to see what you guys think

Should the Filter stay? (of course we would bleep sexual comments and the fu word)

Valder 08-07-2003 10:23 PM

POKEMON!

draygin 08-07-2003 10:33 PM

Keep it, I like not having to see profanity as every other word. But I do think some things should be removed. Such as how fto was filtered so I couldnt say rooftop in the level editing department. But that was fixed. :)

Tseng 08-07-2003 10:51 PM

Pointless threads are bad. :(

I'd say it should stay. But it should be reviewed.

It has no purpose, no goal?

It will not accomplish anything?

It's a waste of time?

It's essentially telling the administrators that Zurkiba does not like the swear filter, disguised as a "Let's get the users' opinions"-style thread?

These together would rather indicate that it is indeed pointless.

To find out what everyone thinks of the filter and whether or not it should stay in effect.

Doesn't mean it has no point.

Your opinion...

LOL whatever you say.

Zurkiba 08-07-2003 11:29 PM

Well I'm just saying... some of the words on there are rather pointless...

Like the name for World War Two Germany, the area where a pilot sits when he flys a plane, etc.

But what will be done with this information? Surely you don't believe that the administration would remove the swear filter just because some people are unable to express themselves intelligently (that is to say, without every other word being a swear).

->Should I create a survey asking if people happen to like the color scheme of the forums?

It can be said that to attempt to argue something's futility would also be arguing its pointlessness of existing.

A waste of my time, and presumably a waste of time for the other forum-goers.

Nice, logical point. ;)

It's used as an insult too frequently. Additionally, I believe that the filter is not set up to censor the word when it occurs by itself without censoring it also when it appears within another word.

Perhaps you should have asked "How can the swear filter be updated?" or something along those lines, if that was what you were trying to say. :\

Ridiculous. Nobody talks about those things much at all on the forums anyway. Graal has nothing to do with either of the things you mentioned, and this is a Graal forum, so I guess your points aren't very valid.

Just because words have multiple uses, doesn't mean they should be removed from the filter. Because the fact is quite simple, the words in the filter are more commonly used as insults, or inappropriate language. I highly doubt people are going to say "well the f*g word means bundle of sticks and I can't say it on the forums!" It's simple. Find other words to make up for it. You could just say "bundle of sticks" instead of it's shorter name.

Now stuff like the abbreviated words for other mmorpgs... I can see how those could get annoying.

On the contrary, Konidias. I've wanted to talk about things such as and wars, yet I figure half of my post will be filtered. Since when does "***" mean bundle of sticks?

I'd say at least 100 years...It's also a commonly used phrase for a cigarette.

Loriel 08-08-2003 01:27 AM

I would like to see it removed, but that won't happen.
I think a very good alternative would be a profile option that disables the swear filter for those who do not like it.

The thread on homosexual marriage in the NGRT is unlikely to have any bearing on whether or not it will happen, but the thread is hardly pointless.

And I think the filter should stay.

Dach 08-08-2003 05:32 AM

We've had a filterless forum and this has already been discussed before. The forums are a much better place because of that. On the other hand, if you would like to dispute some words you should do that a little more directly by saying (in a manner) which ones or PMing an admin.

That has about as much chance of changing or removing the filter, as the current presentation of this thread does.
The last "update" that was done for the forums, was to remove the 0 Views bug, and that took months.

As for the filter, its contents should be reviewed to remove anything else that is as senseless as "fto" in there. But in general, it should stay. I don't trust the general forum population to not use filtered words senselessly.

Cynicism 08-08-2003 01:44 PM

Based on what kind of people populate the forums, I say that the filter should remain. If people cannot convey anger and fustration without the presence of four-letter words, then boo-hoo. :(

Though, like some others, I agree that the acronyms for other mmorpg's have no real place in the filter.

protagonist 08-08-2003 02:06 PM

The mods don't get as much fun when the swear filter is on :(.

Androk 08-08-2003 05:38 PM

I must say the following on the issue:

POKEMON!

Seriusly though I have no clue why he put it in there but I voted that.

Further proving my point that this thread should not exist. It is obviously lacking in the seriousness and goal department.

Well I've never heard someone say/ask something to the extent of "Hey, Tyler, would you go pick up that ***?"

I think a much simpler resolution would've been just to ban the *****s who are constantly swearing at others. Then again, the many suffer the sins of the few.

I have, but they were talking about a cigarette. I think the best solution is to make the filter an option in your profile like someone else suggested.

Ah, but that's in England mainly, if my memory hasn't failed me. If I'm not mistaken, it is also common that the hood of the car is referred to as the bonnet? :)
But, I have heard cigarettes called that before.
