Hartland

1 Attachment(s)
Hello.

Hartland is a new age role playing server, which will try to gain maximum interaction between player and the world, as well as world and world. As example Players will be able to set trees on fire, and they will also be able to see a wolf hunting a rabbit, or a bunch of ants creating a new colony.

Staff right now consists of only me and Kyden, but more are not needed. I tried to get some scripters to help but they are all tied with Graal 2002, so now I gave up and am relearning scripting my self.

Screenshot below has an example of an overworld level. That is a small village in Hartland Forest.

Character sprites were deleted in a freak accedent, and I am trying to retrieve them from Kyden, if that fails, that might push server back some.

I actually think that it looks very nice.

Spark910 05-09-2003 10:17 PM

Looks cartoony style with bits on 3d, should end up interesting.

I hope so too. :)

Looks really nice but is there any way you can make the trees stand out more. It blends in with the grass alot and I dont want it to be how Maloria was when it first opened up and run into things because they blend in alot.

Also just out of curiosity who is your graphics artist?

All Trees are NPCs, so you won't be able to run into them, they'll be drawn over player.

I did Tileset and Interface, Kyden did Character.

Nice I didnt know you could do graphics. :) Still though they blend in with the ground might make the levels look more detailed with something to make them stand out just a little bit more.

MadWolf 05-09-2003 11:30 PM

Looks good, simple and to the point.
The detail in the trees however... just looks like scribbles. Maybe fix that up?

I disagree on the trees, yes a little more contrast but scribble? Naww it gives off a soft appearance to the trees instead of a hard-line look we have on Graal now. It’s just a lot different from what you are used to seeing , a more blended softer look to the trees and I don't think this is a bad thing at all, just different. And I think the "cartoon effect" commented on is just that it looks more 2D than 3D , this in itself may also not be a bad thing.

Kuza 05-09-2003 11:45 PM

That looks really awesome, Androk. I am in love with the graphics and concept. If you guys need any help with storyboarding or maybe even level design. My sn for AIM is "fatescent" without the quotes.

Another question, how far along is this server, Hartland?

I see what you're saying. Personally I dont think that really looks bad unless you zoom way in. From the normal graal screen size I think it looks ok. But then again thats just me. :)

I tried to edit it, but I can't get the coloring right. I'll leave it as is for now.

It is scribble. But basically it is an imitation of how light still gets to lower levels, or how darker leafs cover lighter ones.

Pretty much what I am going for, just because that's the only style that comes out when I draw.

brock128 05-10-2003 12:27 AM

Can't open the screeny, but from what I see from the "SCRIBBLES 101" pic the house seems a bit like Oasis's. But I may be mistaken... I forget exactly what Oasis's houses look like, but I think they look somewhat like that.

Good job. It looks very nice.
The only things that doesn't seem right is the tree. It blends in too much with the grass. Same with that little light thing next to the fence.
It'll probably look better if they were darkened a bit.
Overall Good Job so far. :)

Spark910 05-10-2003 02:47 PM

On the path maybe edit it so there isnt that square look to it, and so it blands into the grass. So make a tile thats like half pathrock, half grass. And do the same tile but for the dirt path etc, would look alot nicer than an automatic stop with the blocky squares.

Spark in real life does your sidewalk "blend" with the grass? or is it chopped off and blocky looking? Walkways and sidewalks in real lfe don't blend together and yes it has a chopped off effect because it mimicks a real life pic does it not? Only old broken pathways have grass on them and unless he is trying to get an old age effect to the scene then I believe the blocked off one is the correct one depending on what effect you are looking for , old or new.

That's not a fence it's a streetlight, and it has a light effect on it...

As for teh tree, I'll see what I can do, I ahve no clue how come people I showed this too never told me about that the tree blends. There were other remarks though, but I am working on those.

This is how the path originated,a s well as the whole city:
First there was 1 house, and a Forester lived there, afetr a while people started coming,a nd building new houses, while walking on ground they created those dirt pathways, and just recently through grup work of whole town they built the road. So as you can see the road is new and it doesn't blend because it's human work over nature :).

Thanks, and yes, this is a new town *cough*as opposed to ruins*cough* and as such it has newly built roads that are kept at a top notch by citizens.

Update

Tree: I was able to make a shade for the tree, which makes it rather distinguished from the grass, so now nobody should loose the tree in the grass.

Character was gained back. Watch out for new screenies in a few days.

Thanks go to everyone who helped and posted with comments in this thread.

I hate that too, I don't know if there is a different setting for that or something.

Anyways, glad everyone likes it and stay tuned :).
