Tips
i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on making levels
|
psst read the level tutorials that are stickied.
|
Either try making a level using a tutorial or simply make your own. Then post it. It's a lot easier to tell you what to improve then simply giving tons of tips, because many my not apply to you based on what you do.

Best way to get good at levels is trial and error. |
Thats not a tutorial, it doesn't tell you where to find the tiles or any advise on how to apply them. Its purly a look at me make a level over stages.
Best bet just make one and post it. |

2.) I thought and knew everything i was typing in that post! 3.) I didn't admit it was a tutorial, I was questioning your own words: Quote:
And people mostly need tutoring when they don’t already know something. ___________________________ Anyway, i'd rarther not continue this further, you have your opinions, I have mine. |

2. If you knew and had thought about everything you said then this only makes you look worse. =\ 3. Quote:

I saw no question in your post regarding it being a tutorial. Only you admitting to it which I've show here. Also refer to previous post where I explained it was not a tutorial on how to use the level editor but it was one on how to make a level look nice. It gave a step by step process on what to do. It told you what tiles to use. The only thing it didnt do was tell you what not to do. That in my opinion would have made it a better tutorial. (Maybe you could ad on for that Spanky) Always an easy way to stop a conversation. That is dont respond. As I wont have anything to respond to. Either that or a post that doesnt have anything I might feel the need to respond to such as I have here. |

Yes that was my whole point it is infact a tutorial. Something he admitted to then denied. It wasnt a tutorial on how to find things just on what to use. Perhaps pointing the area out of where they're found is a good suggestion. Same with perhaps adding a spot on showing what not to do. If you go back my flame was not in that he was posting out suggestions on what could be done to improve the tutorial but in the fact he was stating it was not a tutorial so it shouldnt be used. When him and even you yourself have both admitted to it being a tutorial. Had it just been a suggestion to improve a tutorial there would have been no need for a flame and I would have agreed with him whole heartdly. :) |

To Cody dont let threads like this discourage or get bad feelings towards level makers here. Threads like these are few and far between normally people just stick to giving opinions and ideas. |

The tutorial stickied above is like a half tutorial. All it lacks is explanations on why they placed the tiles in the order that they did.
Knowing where the tiles are is not going to help you much if you don't know what to do with them or where they go. The above tutorial is quite useful because it shows a large variety of tiles being used. |

Thankyou =D Thats all I said, and im glad someone agrees with me. The main lack in that tutorial is that some bits aren't already pre-made so you have to make it up your self, and so, it needs to show how to apply and connect correctly the tiles. |

What boggles my mind is why anyone would even say stupid stuff like "Thats not even a tutorial." Because in my eyes I see they are just jealous. Im not trying to be a jerk but honestly if someone like spark made a "tutorial" I garuntee the ending level wouldn't look to good. You may be able to tell people where the tiles are but that doesn't mean you know how to use them thus using the tutorial. You go by steps thats how I make every level pretty much, I go in steps. If you know basically what items to use in each step it makes it easier for you to make a good level. Even though I don't follow those exact steps in the tutorial b/c I am a seasoned level designer. The tutorial is put in order that is much likely to be easiest for someone trying to make a good level. I just started this level not to long ago and as you can see im doing the same steps. |
done gloating? OK, it is a tutorial, but it helps only a little. But, it is a very good level. And if you are trying to make a level of that nature, it works very good.

yes I'm aware of what it means and he is contradicting himself. Here let me simplify it for you... The tutorial was for a specific type of level in which Mykel stated it only helped little. He then goes on to say if you're making this type of level it helps alot. Thus a complete contradiction in a post 3 sentences long. |
i got a question for u all...just curious...no real reason why i'm asking lol
but when you guys make a level where do you usually start from? top left, top right, center, bottom left, etc?? |

I dont have a set place. I usually put the big part sin first such as trees, houses, cliffs, water. Then see whats left and do it in any random way.
