Updates on Oasis and more

1 Attachment(s)
Okay, well I'm working hard on graphics for Oasis, because as most of you know, graphics are very important (just as important as scripting and level making) I have improved some of the old graphics a bit (A BIT) and made some new ones.. mailbox, boxes, jars, and fence tiles. :) A screenshot is attached of the most recent Oasis level test.

I am also looking for some graphics people now.. If you would like to make some tiles and perhaps sprites for characters or other things, then contact me via forum pm. Remember, I'm looking for people that can match the style I use (or at least make good stuff and allow me to change it a bit to fit with the tiles) you have to show me some work, and if you have aim to talk to me on, that is preferred. I will give you some tiles from my tileset, but I will not give you my entire tileset. If you want to work for me just to get new graphics and stuff from Oasis then forget it. =P

Okay, on to other things besides graphics. I have been playing other pw's to see what they should have done, and I realized that there are so many buildings and things on pw's that players can't really interact with. How many times have you went in a house on some server, and it had the basic bed, maybe some pots, and nothing interesting? Nothing to read, interact with, etc. So many empty buildings.

Well, I have planned for Oasis to have a highly interactive environment. There won't be lots of stuff sitting around that doesn't do anything.. like for example, books on a table will actually be able to be looked through, instead of just being inanimate objects that are only there for looks. You can turn on ovens and put food in them, etc. ;)

I will be looking for level makers in a short while.. I have gotten a lot of people messaging me that want to make levels for Oasis, and I will be sure to make a guideline document, so that levels are made properly using the tiles, and how to make the trees, and everything else. I'm trying to make the tileset easy to manage and use, but some things like doors and things I have planned need to be incorporated into levels that people make.

Soon I will be posting more pictures of new tiles and eventually some new player stuff, such as swimming, climbing, and all the other basic things. Stay tuned!

Oh and by the way.. please do not point out any flaws in the screenshot I attached.. if you don't like something, or think something should be changed, do not tell me about it now.. because more then likely, I already know about it.

It's a mailbox (see the slot) ;)

I just made this weird box thing with some of those tiles.. they are rather versatile and can be used in different things. :D

Im so overwhelmed I dont know what to say :)
It looks really really great thanks for keeping us
informed on Oasis Konidias:D

Faheria_LAT3 03-26-2002 04:10 AM

Beowulf:
I'd say it all looks good except those roof tiles. The roof definitely lacks a sense of depth.

milotheman 03-26-2002 04:12 AM

Wahts your aim?

Psyker 03-26-2002 04:13 AM

Looking great.

ogps_leader 03-26-2002 04:24 AM

I have to agree with everyone else it looks great! Cant wait to play it

Bortlad 03-26-2002 04:26 AM

heh, I usually stay away from playerworlds but I may give this one a try =D

_0AfTeRsHoCk0_ 03-26-2002 04:26 AM

Wow, those dirt tiles are fantastic! Keep up the good work

konidias 03-26-2002 05:12 AM

Thanks guys.. and my aim name is konidias. ;)

I just got finished with my test of progressive text. It's basically like the new message thing on 2k1 (the white text that appears near the bottom of your screen) Except that mine is progressive with adjustable speed, and that you can break the string into sections so it would be like:

Player touches guy, text progressively appears at the bottom of the screen "Hello, welcome to Oasis." you press A "I hope you have a good time Konidias!"

The way to make it say it is simply by setting a client string to:
Hello, welcome to Oasis.|I hope you have a good time #n!

:) I will probably just use this method for in-game events (not talking with players or reading signs or things) I will use a graphical text message box with graphic text for talking with people and reading things.

Lao_Su2 03-26-2002 05:21 AM

Can we see the progressive text? :)
And so all the conversations with the characters and such will be done via text box or is there some other brilliant idea for this?:)

konidias 03-26-2002 05:37 AM

Well, it's kind of hard to show progressive text unless I post the entire script here and I don't wanna do that.. but here is the general idea:

konidias 03-26-2002 05:38 AM

It types out letter after letter and you can set the speed to your reading speed.

konidias 03-26-2002 05:39 AM

then when the line is finished, you simply press A and it will start with the next line (if there is a next line) Oh and when he says his name it's actually grabbing the nick of the npc using #n(-1) in the string. :)

milotheman 03-26-2002 05:44 AM

cool, get on aim

WHIPENIE4 03-26-2002 05:45 AM

Very nice!

Lao_Su2 03-26-2002 05:51 AM

Heh that looks very very good
But you are making your own text box if that is how you will be doing conversations right?

Agrhm... here is my pathetic attempt to makeing a table... in Oasis like Graphics... it still needs more texture and such...

PS: It's 100% unofficial... lol like I needed to say that.

Lao_Su2 03-26-2002 06:27 AM

That looks good i could eat a picnic on that heh :)

Androk2k1 03-26-2002 06:38 AM

AGRH! How does konidias do this? If you look close, he uses not more then 3 colors in 1 object!

LOL I think I use 4 shades in some stuff.. it's all about making a good outline and then adding little details. :)

I usually use one outline color, one inside color, and then I use a darker color of the inside color for shading.. if something requires a bit more color, I just use a lighter color than the inside color. ;)

Pretty good.. could use some wood lines on the top part of the table (if you know what I mean, sorta like the current graal tables except more natural) also, it could stand to be a bit higher.. kinda low to the ground :)

Faheria_LAT3 03-26-2002 07:45 AM

mmmmkay: Keep showing stuff and pretty soon we'll know everything before the release lol. You don't have to tell every little thing you know.

It's pretty good.
I took it and worked with it a bit.

What you need is more detail.
Try not to make perfectly straight shadded areas, if you know what I mean.
Also, you could add some of those hole things that you sometimes see in wood.
I would have showed you myself, but I did this very quickly.

and Kondias where do you come up with all these ideas for different looks of things X_X I have a good imagination but I can't think of stuff like that =p

LOL I have played way too many RPG's I guess. :p I just basically think up general objects that would fit well into tiling and I work with it from there.. for example, if I want to make outdoor stuff, I think of fences, wells, stone walls, plants, tall grass, small stones, perhaps a wooden cart, outdoor table and chair, mailbox, signpost.. basic outdoor things.. then I get some general ideas of what I want them to look like, and run with it. I decided to make a different looking fence from what I have seen on Graal.. since Graal is modeled after zelda, and zelda has big cartoony stuff. I didn't want to keep that same look.

oh and mmmmkay, I'm not showing everything, trust me, lol, it's just some of the work I have been doing, I'm not revealing any details about quests or items or anything like that.. just showing some graphics and describing some things like new message boxes and stuff. :)

Wow I found that so funny I had to say something...considering his graphics are at the same level as graal's tileset, 3 colors is not all that good...though I hope you were being sarcastic.

BTW...mmmkay show some fancy Faheria stuff. I want to see something x_x. Only server I have to look forward to and they never show anything =/

So basicly, you are showing every system? Some friendly advice...do not show that much, even the little you have shown is most likely to much. The more you show, the more people expect, meaning you better have a hell of a lot more then what you show waiting. Usually this isn't the case, the server goes up, player complain, and a bunch of good work goes to waste because so much was shown before...and for what? A few complements, people saying how great your work is, moral boost. I been there, many others have as well (ToT, Faheria, others). Most have learned quickly to keep a project under cover, possibly even make it unknown that it is progressing. I mean, just think, you were at one time a well known, most looked forward to playerworld, you disapear suddenly, then out of no where you appear on the playerlist....I can just see it.

Got kind of carried away, but anywho, you get my point. You don't need to listen, but it would be wise to keep things a little more hidden, and for more reasons then the above.

Well it's great to get compliments on the work that a person has been working on for a long time. Rather than make it, put it up and no one suggested anything and it's all crappy. It's better to get suggestions while creating a PW.

I completely agree.
My PW has been completely under wraps since I started, except for one extremely early screenshot.

screen_name 03-26-2002 11:37 AM

i really don't mind people seeing my screenshots

if they steal it, then they steal it, screw them, but i will know that my stuff is good enough to steal :D

konidias 03-26-2002 07:20 PM

You must not have very high aspects for my playerworld if you think that what I have shown is all my playerworld will be. I have went through development like this before, not with Graal but with another game, and I know what I'm doing.

Three colors for a tile is GOOD. Using 20 different colors for a tile is bad, especially because you can only use 256 colors total in your tileset. Just look at some of the best snes rpgs ever made.. they used about 3 colors for everything (3 different colors for each thing)

I'm not one of those people that puts his own work down.. To be honest, I love Oasis so far, I think I'm doing a good job on it, and I feel it will do well compared to some of the others. It might sound ****y, or sound like I'm bragging, but it's just my honest opinion. Why must you keep reminding me not to show my stuff? Are you actually worried my playerworld is going to be great? What I have shown is like 1% of what Oasis will be when it's released, PLUS it isn't even finalized stuff. Things are subject to change, tiles might be revised, players might be changed, who knows. You make it sound like I'm finishing something and showing everyone every single time. I'm not doing that. :o
