Yep, you run part of a game for it's creators, provide 3/4 of the entertainment together with the other servers, and when you ask for something it's stil considered as a favour.

I was just telling it to all of these 9 and 10 year olds with horribly made worlds who want power only to somehow waste 12 months of their lives getting better and making one and it gets up finally then it is pointless.

My advice is work on something worthwhile. Learn GFX, Programming or something and join a game project. I started a game recently and hopefully one day will actually profit me in some way seeing as how I will have a...

and I started off wanting a server but gave up and..learned programming and started my own game project :P

Lord Helmut, you're such an idiot, just because your experience as a pw owner wasn't peaches in creme, you act like you are the expert on pw owning and you're telling it how it is.

I wont be suprised if you're banned for turning away pw owners and such. Don't think you're all mature and old and stuff either, how old are you? No one under 15 can play? That isn't going to stop *******s and jerks and idiots from playing your game.

Good luck with your game project though, as an "expert in the field" of game projects, I would say your project has a 2% chance to make it, seeing as how your server wasn't that great, and you need an entire GOOD team to make an online game.

I would love to make my own online game but it's a lot of work, you need to be skilled in programming or graphics one, because you will never get a group of great artists and programmers together when all you can do is think up game ideas. If that was how this world worked then every person that had a game idea would have a team of good people helping make it.

You're probably getting ahead of yourself, you will find this out when you realize that your dream of an ultimate game is all fantasy. People don't want to work with someone that has no talent in programming or graphics. How many times have you seen people say "OMG I'M MAKING THIS AWSUME GAME AND I NEED POROGRAMERS, ARTISTSS, LEVUL MAKRES, STORWRITERS, SKRIPTORS, AND I WILL DO MANAGEMNT!!" I have seen it way too many times, and these are games that will never get off the ground. Ideas and design only get you so far.

That's exactly why I stopped my PW. I'd do all that work and get nothing from it, and there would probably be like 2 people on it at most. I wish I realized I was wasting my time sooner :[

I am working on a game, and it is coming along nicely, and you sir, offend me.

Talent in Programming? I have been bumped up in my programming class because I am the top of the class, all with people older than me, and we are working from a University curriculum. I currently have 100% in that class, and got ahead today (typing over/about 100wpm helps).

Now, as for what people say.

GFX People keep applying, and I'm getting better stuff than expected.

Level Makers? I am one of the better ones in Graal.
The story is already done, and gets revised a lot, I've written stories a lot as a child, and I have a really good one. (Had to cut it down because it was long)

Scripters aren't needed, as this game that I'm currently working on doesn't have level editor capabilities, although it wouldn't be hard to add, but the cartridge might not have enough room.

Management is not needed, I am a strong leader, and I have done well so far.

Maybe I took your message too personally, for that I apologize, but I will be tell you when my game is launched. Look out for Everdarken Shadow.

I meant people that try to create their own game and they have no programming or graphic skill. Not people that actually were able to program lol.

Man now I feel iffy about my server, all my years of playing graal I have built up to the point where I am finally good enough to make a server and all you people are saying it sux. How bad CAN it be.. tell me now before I finish my 200 levels

it is fun for a while but after a bit all the request for staff, hacking, and bad comments get you down :(

making the levels/npcs
-the most fun part, being offline, not distacted by Pm, just letting the creativiety and programming flow.

keeping them updated/fixed once online
-when you fix stuff, you are on RC, and if you are on RC peopel will send you about 5 PMs a minute, each one wanting a diffrent thing form you, gimmie gimmie! You cannot fix stuff online AND answer all the PMs. whcih leads to:

you cannot go it alone
-get a good staff, and delegate authority to those you have trusted for at least a month. If you are even a bit suspocios, or hear a rumor form more than one person about them being a hacker wor wanting power, DO NOT give high level rc or ability to edit atributes, if any rc at all. most rumors of his sort tend to be true, fomr my expernice.

hackers
-These people have a stick up their crap hole so long its gotten them poo poo brianed ideas, that hacking a server is ok.
they should all die horrible painful deaths.
Yet, they will always be around.
Use RC to get their IP, ban the aswipe, and warn everyone you know about that acoucnt name/ip range.
Do not listen to their childish taunts or threats, they are loosers with nothing better to do and deserver to burn in heck for eternity.

staff requests
"l like yous server, can i be a gp?" or "i am a good gp, can i be LAT admin?" you will get these, make sure to have in your system NPC it checks a server string when they say "are you hiring? it does a say2 command on that string, so they have no reason to PM you about it. use RC to edit that server string.

peoples comments "this sux"
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Consider it briefly, have you heard it before? if not, screw the arrogant bastard.
If you have heard the same commnets many times, talk to staff about possible change.

Security: use the IP range on the RCs, ban what RCs are not in use by anyone to try and provent hacks. it was our GAT admin who hacked and brough Sanstrata down, next server i run i will use this IP list and the baove steps to e more careful.
Only give 2 or 3 people at most full upload/download rights.

If you get stressed out, delegate a co-owner and take a week off, then remmeber how much fun you have made your server. take a graal break , everyone needs one. its a game! relax.

To be honest, I don't think anyone should be co-owner.. having more then one owner is just asking for trouble. Having somebody other then the owner of the server, upload and download access to everything, is extremely stupid.

That is why so many servers end up getting "hacked" because one of the people with full ftp, deletes everything. Oh and don't think that's the worst part, not only do they delete everything, but then they save everything and post your entire server in a zip file on some website. So now everyone and their brother knows all your scripts, secret stuff, any projects you were working on, etc.

Only one person should have full ftp access, there's a reason that you can adjust folder rights for people, and I hope some of you server owners use that feature.

Roms: When Medivia is finished, the Viktor/Roms era will be over, because Medivia is my last big project, then im gonna move onto other things, cause as we all know, all things have a beginning and an end, what I plan on doing is

1) work on Auroria Online
2) practice my drawign skills and get my hands on adobe photoshop for a gba game im helpin to make with shaunelementis

one little problem with that, if only one person has ftp, that means thats the only person who can update the server and stuff like that. and if the owner isnt on alot to uplaod things, staff will complain alot.

Good Things about Owning a graal server:
-(Online)-
*You get too watch people wonder around your own creation that took you loads of work.
-(Offline)-
*Your so dedicated on working on it, it makes it fun, seeing what new ideas you can come up with next and new npcs and npcws.


Good Things about not Owning a graal server:
*You will probably play graal longer. Because thats most people's goal in graal is too own their own server. (Co Owner or Owner).


I've lowered my Graal hours a lot. I dont get on that much anymore, I visit a few times. Since I layed off playing graal I have gotten the experiance to learn how to make midis,wavs, and other sound files. And its really sad to admit, but my grades have also picked up a lot.

Well, that all depends on how much the owner is on their server. I would be on my server all the time, or at least have an instant messenger set up to alert me when one of my staff messages me for anything.

Think about it this way, would you rather be the only person with full ftp, and have things be delayed a bit, or would you rather have 3 or more other people have ftp that could go nuts one day and wipe out everything on your server and sell all your scripts and levels on 2k1 or something. :)

Then you have the unhappy staff, that decide to quit, and feel that it's necassary to remove everything they ever made/fixed/thought of.

Stefan puts a lot of faith in the people he gives power to. Think about it, would you ever give BIRDBIRD ftp and full access to your server? :p

Mm, how are the character sprites for the game coming along? I haven't seen you on aim..

Being the owner of a PW and running it isn't as glorious as it seems to be.


When your just another low player, you look up to the owner of a server and wish that someday you could be up there.

=/ Well I have Co-Owned Andor before and I have seen how corrupt these people get. They get mad, but yet they are scared. So they give out their RC pass to other people and the people delete everything so fast NPC-Server crashes. I will never let that happen on my server, I only wish I would've been able to stop that guy before he deleted everything...
Being a server owner must have its ups and downs, so I will still go on creating mine. I have picked up a lot of security tips on the thread and I thank you all for the information. Oh yeah I would never give BirdBird ftp on my server, yet alone hire him. He scares me...:eek:

mmmmkay: I'm sticking with graal because I do not have enough skills to make a project, I only do levels. What I would really like to do is make levels for a RPG for GBA like say Golden Sun, that would rock!

Youre going to far now, yet you havent seen helmuts work, and you critize him?
He knows mutch more programming than you do, i work on his game, he showed me te engines, they were awesome, of course, we wont show anything yet.
But koni lets say, you make an awesome game, but only you knwo tis awesome cuz you dont give any info out, and ppl critize your work, how would you feel?
Its the same with helmut, he has an awesome engine, and codes, but he wont show anythign of it, bc of that you critize his work, i think you shall appoligize to him

Since the new RC client allows the setting of folder rights, I use it to give specific tasks to certain staff...such as level work. I have most of my levels all organized into subfolders that I can set the rights to on a certain account...only I will ever have 100% FTP access on my PW (excluding Stefan).

Of course, none of the staff I've given tasks to have done anything I've asked so far :/

Also, I will never give access to my starting area since that has lots of my special scripts in it :)
