I know this would probably make playing Graal even laggier and probably shouldn't be added until the game is completely optimized and runs faster on slower processors, but I think a voice chat feature would be really fun to have.

Excellent

Excellent idea :)

Psyker 03-14-2001 11:03 PM

so, graal's turning into a huge chatroom with swords and stuff...

Not necessarily. The game element is still there, its just that I think voice chat would be cool to have.

freddyfox 03-15-2001 12:40 AM

Hurray! Now we can listen to people curse 109% more of the time!

Lycia 03-15-2001 12:46 AM

Nah, it would have the ability to ignore certain users.

galen 03-15-2001 01:04 AM

At one time, way back when, we were running a RogerWilco server for voice chat during game play.

Psyker 03-15-2001 01:46 AM

If I had voicechat AND Graal running, I'd be slower than molasses...

(I have a 28.8 and 133 MHz comp, dad won't let me upgrade for some reason)

This is what I was thinking! I don't think Voice Chat will be a standard for another 3-5 years, when everybody have faster computers.

Voice Chat will lag out modem users & might cause some problems with some ISP's with bandwidth input/output.

Crono Illusion 03-15-2001 08:22 AM

Voice chat is just too slow and unstable on most older systems.

Zulithe 03-15-2001 09:20 AM

I voice chat on Yahoo all the time. Its surprisingly non laggy. I use cable so its no problem for me, but a friend of mine uses 56k and he can hear everything just fine too. I would love a voice chat feature as well as general improvements to the Instant Messaging system. Maybe a Send File option and larger more detailed profiles. Things like that.

Lycia 03-15-2001 04:33 PM

Not if its optimized.

grim_squeaker_x 03-15-2001 07:14 PM

Blah.

If we are going to have voice chat just put in an option in the general options like "disable voice chat".

Fai 03-15-2001 07:55 PM

Um. That idea is UDMB. They could just put up a voicechat on the site or something.

lol, I agree

Tyhm 03-15-2001 10:26 PM

Would this optionally replace PMs, or in-game text?

I reckon PM audio would be at regular volume, whereas in-game audio would vary based on proximity....

Man, that'd be superloud though....walking through L13 with everyone talking?

Probably just "Audio PMs"

Lycia 03-15-2001 10:28 PM

No, no, no. Not real time voice chatting. Just kinda like an IPARTY thing.

Record, send.

Tyhm 03-15-2001 11:29 PM

Well, yeah, obviously, you can do it that way if you want to precompress the files, but real time or delayed, there's going to be 100 some people talking. At once. Especially if you're an admin.
Would it be in the room...(unknown) Hi Lycia (Bob1000, further away) hi lycia (SuperNewbie) HI LYCIA!@! ?
If so, would it be one-at-a-time...with a huge buffer...Unknown gets an arrow over his head, then Bob, then SuperNewbie?
If so, does everyone hear everyone, and each room has its own speech buffer?
Or PM, people talking at you from all over the server?
I imagine that would have to be one-at-a-time....that'd probably work best....

grim_squeaker_x 03-15-2001 11:31 PM

Blah.

From what I read from that IParty stuff lLycia posted it's sort of like PM's, although if that option was implemented I wouldn't want it to be possible in masses, that'd be just too plain horrid hearing masses in voice.

Lion'el-Jonson 03-15-2001 11:51 PM

heh

Voice chat is actually how Graal Radio Network started.
