Skype
There's a new site making the rounds that allows people to simply enter a Skype username to retrieve their IP. There's no privacy settings in Skype to prevent this, it's due to it's P2P nature of the service that it's possible. The only way to get around it is to use a Proxy or VPN.
Malicious players on Zodiac are currently using it to DoS each other as a result. |
Skype resolvers have been around for a while now, its also quite simple to get someone's IP through skype (if you have them on your friends list).
Some players on era have also reported this happening to them, as-well as some previous/current staff members. |
Does this actually affect the victims measurably? Do they get bumped off the server or something?

If the DoS is distributed over many PCs (DDoS) it can even knock the player offline from his internet :/ which would obviously disconect them fromt he server too. :C

To clear this up a little more, this can be a big problem. Years ago a single person (using a botnet?) was capable of at the single push of a button dc'ing my entire internet untill they felt like allowing me back on. Skype isn't the only way to get a person's IP, you can use PM/MASS messages too (tho I wont explain how).
I've seen people even go as far as to enter the default admin password into router and change password blocking all access. I had to push a button to reset the router. |
