I make stuff

Decided to start a little overworld so I could take my mind of other things and I didn't feel like making graphics.

This time though I decided I actually wanted to finish it. My older overworlds I had absolutely no expectations and I never planned to actually finish them, but I liked designing the world. So now I figured I'd make a small one I could realistically finish.

Galdor 07-27-2012 08:22 PM

Looking good so far :D

Imperialistic 07-27-2012 08:24 PM

Wow! I can't wait to see the end result, keep up the good work Dusty!

callimuc 07-27-2012 10:32 PM

You make good stuff

haro41 07-28-2012 12:35 AM

Great stuff so far. I'm glad you're utilizing every part of the map so far. Too often I see extravagantly detailed cliffing and shorelines that have no purpose gameplay-wise, thus the player can't even get close enough to see them, or they are generally ignored.

Already I can see your ideas through your leveling.

ff7chocoboknight 07-28-2012 12:37 AM

That's some pretty neat stuff.

WanDaMan 07-28-2012 01:08 AM

I like it a lot, smashing work on the cliffs - nicely done!

Lovely work on the customs too +rep

How much work did you put into the custom tile set and would you be willing to post it?

As for the map, it looks good. I am happy to see that you've put some planning into the map, I can already see areas where a player would have to revisit after obtaining a certain time to access alternate areas. Would love to see more.

Not sure how much work has been put into it. It's an old tileset I use whenever I make levels, and I just add onto it as I need tiles. The problem is it's fairly messy and many of the tiles added are hard to tell what their purpose is as they don't really look like anything. Since this is a tileset I just use for offline levels I make when I'm bored, I just slap tiles in anywhere I see space so it's pretty unefficient. I'll post it when I'm done though(no point in posting it now as it's always getting new tiles).

And yes, there is going to be a purpose to the map, and a gameplay flow, even though it's not meant to actually be played. It's always good to approach a map like this imo, even if it will never be played as it's good practice for world design.

An update before bed.

zerxusgraal 07-28-2012 09:06 AM

Looking supersweet :)

ff7chocoboknight 07-28-2012 09:41 AM

A lot of grass cliff tiles on dirt.

Crono 07-28-2012 03:09 PM

top half, esp top left - love it

bottom half, not feeling it yet. we'll see how it turns out

scriptless 07-28-2012 11:16 PM

I like your work, interesting tho to see your perspective in relation to how cliff's look at different viewing angles? I'm assuming exactly top-down?

Didn't get too much done today.

Imperialistic 07-29-2012 09:05 AM

I like the work I just don't care for the iClassic style of structuring, I was hoping to see this end up a little more unique and something we haven't seen before.

DustyPorViva 07-29-2012 06:27 PM

iClassic style of structuring? O.o

Imperialistic 07-29-2012 06:42 PM

The huge cliffs that surround the top portion is near exact to the cliffing on iClassic.
Actually, almost all the cliffing is comparable to iClassic.

You mean it looks vaguely similar to the northern cliffs that were inherited from pre-wipe Classic?

Imperialistic 07-29-2012 07:52 PM

I will log on iClassic sometime today and take screenshots to compare the overworlds because I don't know how I can explain it in words.

kalabar24 07-29-2012 10:29 PM

I like it. I dont know if its just me, but the town looks very closed in. Good job though.

Town will be somewhat small, just north of the single blue house. However right now it's looking pretty confined so I might expand the gmap a single level and move the town to the east.

scriptless 07-29-2012 11:32 PM

It's starting to look pretty sweet, nice work Dusty.

Before I post my examples I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to say that the leveling is the same and/or copied in any way. I'm just trying to show how it has the same tiling strategies that we see on iClassic, not that it's a bad thing.. I just had higher expectations for your gmap.

I lettered 3 area's on your gmap image; A,B,C. and they will go accordingly to each one of my screenshots I took on iClassic.

Pandar 07-30-2012 12:49 AM

Love the cliffwork, though I'm not such a huge fan of the entire bottom right sector. It's coming along very nice, Dusty, good work. :)

Tbh it just looks like a more old-fashioned way of cliffing. A bunch of classic servers used to feature those kinds of cliffs. Babylon did, Classic did, I think Delteria did too.

Not much to show for tonight because I ended up redoing an entire portion of cliff-work that I wasn't happy with. Then I ended up making some custom graphics.

Matt 07-30-2012 06:28 AM

looks nice ^^

MattKan 07-30-2012 07:01 AM

Those cliffs are nice!

Well, the cliffs at A look like.. cliffs. I guess. The stuff at B is rather common as well, and Dusty did do a better job at it. I can't spot any similarities at C though. Seriously. They are not even slightly alike, save for the fact they're both beaches.

Imperialistic 07-30-2012 09:03 AM

You are examining the tiles which I thought I made clear not to do. It's solely about the strategic structuring and placement that is way too familiar with this age of development.

Uhh.. well, whatever works for you, I guess.

WanDaMan 07-30-2012 10:17 AM

I am really enjoying this WIP.

Nice cliffing too, I am eager to see how this turns out. Keep up the good work!
