Comments on levels

I had a full description of all the levels, but then the page refreshed for whatever reason... The levels will be posted in chronological order from earliest level to most recent. I'm not particularly proud of the earlier levels. Most of these levels are on UN, where I work. Leave your comments/criticism here, forum PM me, or find me on UN. Some of them are unfinished as you can see.

I like them all!

Aside from the ninth and tenth picture I see nothing that needs fixing at all...
I must say that doesn't happen often, I'd like to ask you a question.

Thanks. What's wrong w/ the 9th & 10th other than small tile errors? I thought if anything, problems would be found in the first 5 levels seeing as they're the oldest and the ones I'm least proud of.

Nice levels :)

Just the small tile errors, but it may be the tilesets fault.

No error in that left one.

That can be arguable, it's an unavoidable error so that voids it I guess. But I can see where david's comming from. They're petty errors anyway...

The one on the right is from the tileset. Either way, thanks for the sharp eye.

This level would go before the first outdoor, made for my friend's guild house (Jin Dynasty). It's a really old level.

This level goes after the level that has the sign "Happy Birthday Kristin"

Nice work, some very nice levels. Keep it up !

Unholy Nation's tiles from Angelus (I believe) so I'm assuming you work(d) there?

Crono 05-21-2012 10:26 AM

you have a solid grasp of styling tiles (grass, castle, etc) but now you need to break away from that specific Xelt style. i know you're working on UN but there's some bad habits youve picked up from levels that were situationally styled (area below TC where a lot of grass on grass is used for the hell of it) that you're using on a lot of you work. grass on grass shouldnt be spammed like that, its very lazy detail and incredibly ugly.

insides are pretty generic in terms of modern day UN but if thats the style you were aiming for, you pretty much nailed it. now try to add your own touches and do things the way you want to as opposed to the way it's expected on UN. keep at it :]!

Jokes aside, I agree 100% with Crono about the grass layering.

horrible tileset and images, and you have like a little floor with massive walls.

also , i agree with Crono. I think you should use some more imagination and play around with different 'detail' tiles instead of spamming just a few.

What would be considered Xelt's style? I never necessarily worked with him or anything. I've seen one of his levels in Isle of Bane but that's about it.
I was questioning myself about the grass on grass a couple of days ago, hearing it from somebody else makes sense to me.

@ Insides, I've never really seen levels with the type of style I use.

Xelt style is, for example, right below TC. Before he left Graal he would spam grass-on-grass tiles for detail and I see you over-using it on your outside levels. Xelt is a solid LAT but spamming grass-on-grass used to be looked down upon by other LATs and I really can see why (kind of ugly and only works in some situations).

Your insides are like a mix of Zodiac and UN but something just screams UN, can't put my finger on it. It's not bad, would just be nice to see something more signature. :]

Yeah I agree, grass-on-grass makes a level look cluttered, making it look like there's too much going on (which isn't easy on the eyes). But I think if it's used sparingly then it can add variety to a level and also still look good.

And don't call it Xelt style, I don't want ownership of that style

Man that was like 4 years ago, and you said yourself I "revived" it, not "created" it ;D

But I digress - I can't see some of the pics in the first post (including the outside level), but what I can see is nice. I would suggest taking a risk and making less "safe" levels i.e. be more daring in your style if that makes sense. There is no doubt that these levels look good, but there are lots like them already out there - when making levels, think to yourself "what is unique about this level?" Is it original?".

Not a fan of those muddy dungeon floor tiles, I think the tiles look ugly but that's just my opinion. But I really like the Crossfire PPK level.

I didn't really look anywhere when I did the outside levels so I wasn't really influenced by Xelt, but after going below TC, yeah I can see why you're saying that. Thanks for the advice!

I don't like the muddy dungeon floor tiles either, it just matched for the quest & those with it, are really old levels. Being more daring with leveling makes sense. Thanks for the feedback. On another note, didn't know you were still active O_O

I came back to defend myself against Crono's malicious accusations.

Meh. They look nice, but I'm not a fan of the style.

A new level I made based on water. The top is meant to look elevated o=

It doesn't - Mainly due to the stones in the deep water.. where the 'fall' is meant to be
