Preview: Castle Quest Preparation

This video shows a few baddies and a cannon NPC among other small resources, which will be part of the upcoming Castle Quest.

For those wondering why it looks like a mine this is because the quest begins as a tunnel that leads beneath the Castle.

As usual this is entirely for demonstration purposes, the contents are subject to change. There is still quite a lot of work to do towards the meat and bones of the quest so a release should not be expected for a while yet.

looks neat, really should find a new outfit for the videos though. ;)

maximus_asinus 09-07-2011 12:48 AM

New baddies look neat, as does the new tiles. Looking forward to that next release.

smirt362 09-07-2011 12:55 AM

Neato!

gaben 09-07-2011 12:56 AM

Smooth pushing

jacob_bald6225 09-10-2011 03:39 PM

One thing it needs is a moving feet animation for pulling. I don't know how much of a hassle this would be without the body images for it though.

When there were sprites instead of ganis the legs moved.

His character looks like a UN player circa 2003. :(

Here is a preview of the new mine cart system primarily intended for use within the Castle Quest:

smirt362 09-25-2011 02:52 AM

All of my love. Are you going to have a thrilling minecart ride where you have to jump over obstacles, change to the correct track, and maybe have baddies come after you? Because that would be awesome. Stefan and Unixmad should really be paying you to make such quality work

papajchris 09-25-2011 03:06 AM

Very cool system!

It's a remarkable timing for you to mention this, as after a recent conversation I am now convinced that they intend to keep PC Graal as a development platform to take resources for use on their official controlled servers. This may be appealing for some developers to be payed for and it's something they are prepared to offer, but it's potentially discouraging for those looking to develop a server in its entirety.

Tricxta 09-25-2011 05:14 AM

Very nice work :) I can't wait for the castle quest, it looks as though it's going to be epic!

Emera 09-25-2011 11:39 AM

Them rail sounds are beautiful. Who made them :O

maximus_asinus 09-25-2011 05:55 PM

very nostalgic, great work

fowlplay4 09-25-2011 07:02 PM

I want to build things with the blocks you're creating.

It's actually just a modified train.wav that comes with the client, to match the length of the gani with a fade in/out.

Kamaeru 09-26-2011 04:10 AM

Draisine sound effect

Very clever.

MattKan 09-26-2011 05:05 AM

Phenomenal.

MysticalDragon 09-28-2011 03:58 PM

I'am amazed as always about your work.

Geno 09-28-2011 10:03 PM

Yeah this was where I originally got the inspiration from, which was actually prior to Classic's wipe but the way the systems were then complicated actions beyond mere movement, or moving into different levels, and could cause conflicts with other scripts. The difference with the new systems may be completely invisible to players and therefore may not seem like a big deal, but does make creating sophisticated things like this a lot easier.

I wasn't really sure if I wanted to add the whole "press key to decelerate before hitting a corner, or fly off", I think that would have been more of an inconvenience than a challenge. On the other hand sword and other weapons are supported, for instance we could also have arrow firing from the cart.

Supaman771 09-28-2011 11:22 PM

You can only figure out how to slash in one direction, yet you can manage to hop that 800lb mine cart off the tracks and land it back down flawlessly.

So
Freaking
Qt.

Kamaeru 09-30-2011 06:41 PM

Classic always had cool adventure segments that took you from point A to point B, really setting itself apart from Zelda and definitely reminiscent of Super Mario RPG.
I remember when you beat the quest at the Ninji fort you would go on a barrel ride. and then there was another barrel ride that took you to Avalon (right?).
and you ride in the canon to get to the place where you got the ratform

The barrel ride from the Ninji Tower brought you to Graal Castle, and the barrel ride from Babord brought you to a cave island that lead to Avalon.

The pirate canon to Nimda is part of the storyline and only happens once. You would need to go there by boat or spaceship after that. Can use a jet ski (horse on water) or swim after you get Zorbi Ring, too.

Kamaeru 10-01-2011 06:21 PM

Yes. The best version of Graal Castle featured all of the above, plus you would find many players riding around on jet skis, especially in the western seas between the mainland and Nimda. The only reason I used to take the boat around is to enjoy the fishing while getting where I wanted to go.
You also would find lots of NPCs which were simply a graphic like a pizza or a pie or a beer, that were scripted in the simplest way in gscript1 to allow the player to pick up, throw, and hide under them like a bush. I would like to see that return.

One of the best adventure games ever made.

I always thought the boat would've been way more fun if it moved on the overworld!

ff7chocoboknight 10-02-2011 08:09 PM

The boat was the best fishing spot!

Geno 10-03-2011 01:47 AM

either way looks great! The whole decelerate part could be good if used the right way, but I don't see a need.

unless you fall off the side into some sort of bottom level where you have to walk back and restart.

There's the idea that we could just have a faster type of minecart later in the game where decelerating would be necessary.

ff7chocoboknight 10-03-2011 05:17 PM

Could be a draisine since you have to control the speed of one yourself.

ffcmike 11-08-2011 08:49 PM

Lots of progress made, yet still a lot more to do, definitely the biggest quest project I've attempted.
So here's another small teaser:
