WIP, need advice and suggestions

Hey there!

I've recently began making some levels again, only to find out I'm really, really rusty!

These levels are for a small project of mine, and something does not feel quite right. As you can see in the first level, I've began to do some detailing. I'm not sure wether I like it or not, don't want it to become over detailed or crowded. There is something I don't like with the sand path outside the cave, although everything certainly is subject to change. Do you think I'm heading towards disaster, or should I just continue with the current style I'm using?

I'd appreciate any suggestions or criticism, negative or positive!

I personally prefer this type of detailing with the tileset you're using; I would suggest adding grass detail around certain objects not randomly (which you have done). I'd also detail the marsh land too but not so much, the cave's do need the correct dark tile so it blends properly and also don't forget to add a few stones to the dirt!

Great levels though, nice job on the cliffs!! Really good stuff :D

Not a leveler, but here are my two cents:

I like the top level, because it has 'centers of action'. I.e., the two caves, the house, and the gravestone. When I look at the level, those things make me want to play and see what they are.

The bottom level is empty in comparison. I don't think it's a matter of detailing either, just a matter of how many centers of action there are.

I actually prefer Wan cliffs. I'm sorry, they just look very smooth.

Maybe I missed something but why are people always making a black square as cave entrance? There is still the tile matching those colors of the cave entrance ;)

But back to topic: I really love that levels. Good job keep going

Wan's cliffs are fine for learning, hell he taught me the same style. The problem is with the perspective, it's completely ****ed. :(

Can you link me examples of more prefered styles?

I like it O: Really, in my opinion, players won't notice every single error so I like it, but then again, I'm not experiencced. ^_^

I think they look alright. I would change the grass detail like Wan said.

Kamaeru 08-19-2011 05:11 AM

Strangely, I like the grass detailing.

I think that you've got a clean style, but you probably just haven't learned a lot of tricks that were considered more deeply by Nintendo when they developed the tileset originally for Zelda 3.

Don't zig-zag the cliffs and I think that grave graphic or tiles you have there looks odd because it still looks like it has the forehead of a bomy bopot to me.
