Evo Graphics #1

As I've got a new server, I got somewhat inspired by Zelda: Wind Waker. Made this 'sketch' in a day or two. Opinions?

I like it! Keep up the good work Vinka and good luck this time ;)

xXziroXx 07-06-2011 03:50 PM

That is actually pretty darn good looking.

JesusFreak250 07-06-2011 04:05 PM

I love it <3

That rlly looks more great than europa to be honestly. Europa was kind of a mish mash and would probably have taken too long to build it up. But this really looks great. Go on making such that great stuff ;)

But the cliffs look kind of strange maybe they could get a little touch :)

Bubble13 07-06-2011 06:58 PM

It looks really good.

DustyPorViva 07-06-2011 07:17 PM

Trees, bushes, hedges need to be a different shade of green to be separated from the grass. Right now it's just a huge uniform image that takes way too much effort to discern boundaries. Wouldn't mind seeing the grass a little bit more desaturated either.

Gothika 07-06-2011 11:50 PM

Very nice. I'm sure you will give it your all.

Deas_Voice 07-07-2011 12:54 AM

that looks freaking awesome compared to the pics1

Seich 07-07-2011 02:26 AM

That looks really nice, great job!

WanDaMan 07-07-2011 03:06 PM

I would relish for the opportunity to work with that tileset; it's beautiful. Nice job V' :D

Cubical 07-07-2011 03:50 PM

not a fan of the houses or the cliffs, i love everything else.

ThomV 07-07-2011 08:55 PM

Thanks alot guys. :)

Yep, I had that in the back of my mind aswell. I desaturated the grass a few times and ended up with this tone, hope it's better.

I also improved the bushes and water, along with some new tiles:

amazing

0_0 very nice!

MattKan 07-08-2011 01:03 AM

you should make in-corners for the hedges

otherwise it's fantastic

You might be able to get away with it. The main thing you should focus on is desaturating the grass a little. Then from there you can play with the trees/bushes/hedges individually.

What I did was desaturate the whole scene, then darked the tree a little, dropped the saturation a tad on it. Then I brightened the bush some, and messed with the hue of the hedges. However, you don't need to drop the overall contrast, I was just being lazy. If you can isolate the grass itself you can just work with that.

Have you considered maybe trying graphics similar to Minish Cap instead of LttP/Graal?

http://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/920670-t...ish-cap/images

They're very similar to Graal and the older 2D Zelda games, but are slightly larger in object dimensions(such as the interiors) and don't adhere to tile/grids as much. I think it would suit your style more and give you more creative freedom, while still feeling very similar to Graal.

Rave_J 07-08-2011 04:24 AM

idk i guess its me but it just doesnt look that wow figure to me. maybe just the drawing but it would be something i would be annoyed with kind of like mal trees everybody love them to me they were really ***

Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I was initially taking some of Minish Cap's gfx as a reference. You hit it right on the nail, I do want more creative freedom, simply tracing pics1.png takes most of the fun out of it. Yet I still want give it that classic 'Graal' feel to it. I'm gonna be experimenting some tomorrow. :)

After alot of tweaking back and forth, I've ended up with this palette. I think it'll work. Opinions?

Clockwork 07-08-2011 06:10 PM

Make the hedges have a tinge of blue or purple? dunno, just seems like a ****load of green to me.

Maybe it could use more contrast too? Your player is rather dark and REALLY pops out on the tileset with little to no dark colors. Tho you could probably desaturize outfits and heads with a script too.

Tiles look good tho :D They really remind me of link to the past for some reason and make me wanna demand a chicken statue with the n/s/e/w around it XP

I like the bright green hedges more, dark colors are depressing

I love the new hedges, although the rest of the scene is now slightly darker than expectations... I wouldn't call it depressing though. Though I think just the grass needs to be adjusted now, nothing else.

BigBear3 07-08-2011 08:46 PM

I like the Mog.

Clockwork 07-08-2011 08:50 PM

Not sure if I like the blue ones or green ones now XD I agree w/ dusty. Maybe makin the pathway stones mog is standing on more white would help? ~o~

I like this more xD but with some more contrast.

Keep in mind that not all monitors are calibrated so people will most likely see it differently anyways so don't get too picky.

ThomV 07-08-2011 10:12 PM

Thanks for the feedback :)

Yeah, this is getting kinda tedious tweaking the colors over and over. I have three different screens on my desk (two Windows, one Mac), trying to find the right balance. I just wanna get this the best I can.

Quick edit on the grass. Hope this is well balanced:

I didn't want to bash you, it's simply very unlikely for anyone to take you serious if you don't take what you do(leaving comments/feedback) serious. It's as if you don't even try, or have never passed English class.

And about the tree, I can understand it annoys you if it isn't your taste. It'd be nice if you'd explain the reason why next time, and how one can improve it.

Nobody is saying that these graphics justify the server being on the PlayerWorlds tab, this will always be judged based on the content that is at hand. And do you honestly think new players care deeply about graphics provided there is a sufficient amount of things to do?

Not that I can see where you're coming from about drawed tiles being "annoying", I personally find this refreshing, it looks unique but importantly not too alien.

Much better. The important thing is giving contrast between walkable areas and nonwalkable areas and this is being accomplished quite well here.
