Recent lag problems

1 Attachment(s)
Graal Kingdoms has been having quite a lot of lag recently. I'm fairly sure the lag is originating from the serverside as the client isn't intensive on my hardware and latency is only at 200 ms which is common for my region.

ffcmike 06-25-2011 09:12 PM

I wonder if this may be related to my experience today of suddenly being disconnected from Classic every 5 - 10 minutes despite not having an actual lagspike.

Deas_Voice 06-25-2011 09:13 PM

it's indeed the server, since i were crypting the other day, we all experience that lag your talking about at the same time.

joel34 06-25-2011 09:22 PM

People did complain about the massive monster spawn that caused lag.

cyan3 06-25-2011 09:40 PM

Also been having trouble hosting events such as spars and musical chairs.

StormYs 06-26-2011 12:27 AM

Ya, i also am experiencing horrible lag the past few days... it already sux for us europeans that the server moved to america -_-

papajchris 06-26-2011 06:23 AM

Era has been experiencing terrible lag as well. I mean like everyones lag is in the 1000's.

Felix_Xenophobe 06-26-2011 09:41 AM

Maybe people shouldnt host big events when this **** is going on. But when the right people are winning I guess it's fine :):):):)

ViperZakuto 06-26-2011 09:10 PM

i heard stefan was trying to fix this issue. =/

Deas_Voice 06-26-2011 11:45 PM

UN was lagging horrible too today~

SouFooOoO 06-28-2011 08:10 PM

Are Era and GK on the same server? I haven't had problems on Zodiac.

Era, GK, and Zodiac are all on the same machine (or at least the same IP). In fact, it looks like all the classic and gold servers are on the same IP.

Same IP doesn't mean anything. I have like 5 computers on one IP.

Rapilia 06-30-2011 02:25 AM

:d!

It's rare for servers to be behind NAT, though, not to mention that both of the iPhone servers have their own IPs.

This is a physical host with a lot of virtuals. Considering the servers are listening on seperate ports, there is no major issue here. It's like one web server serving multiple websites through vhosts. Classic iPhone got a separate machine due to how intensive it got during peak times. This isn't an issue for most smaller playerworlds.

My point is that they're on the same host, hence lag problems could potentially affect them all, especially if it's a network issue.

To add a little more: some virtualization software doesn't limit resources per child, in which case even too much processing being done by one child could easily affect the others.

Even with hard limits on processing, excessive I/O done locally could also lag all the other children. However, since the boxes are rented/colocated, I wouldn't be surprised if there is also a SAN available to avoid the majority of the IO issues, but that is just speculation.

A few days ago I've restarted the Kingdoms npcserver because it was taking close to 2 GByte of memory, must have been some monster spawn or event or so?

Is it possible to add something to /memstats which gives us info about how much free memory there is, and how much is in swap? If so, developers could handle this sort of problem themselves.

Admins 07-01-2011 12:45 PM

There is /memstats malloc
Kingdoms takes again more than 1 GByte, for a long time it was quite stable but in the last few days it's a lot. Previously that only happened with the release of the easter quest. It shows 800 MByte of freed memory for Kingdoms.

Event masters have been spawning ridiculous amounts of monsters lately. Maybe talk to Tig and make sure they are stripped of these rights.

ViperZakuto 07-05-2011 11:59 PM

those events are fun. why not try and workout a solution... instead of limiting the fun.

Monsters spawned by non-admin EMs don't give experience. It is a problem with the MUDlib, and one that needs to be fixed. EMs probably shouldn't be spawning so many monsters anyway, though.

ViperZakuto 07-07-2011 04:44 AM

why not?
