Targetting System

This is pretty annoying. It happens when people go out of your range while you target them, which is pretty lame... It makes it impossible to re-target them without targeting someone else, or reconnecting.

Theres a few problems with the system on v6 lately since we got the auto-target system, probably simple fixes. Just pointing this out.

I'm going to rescript the wand system when I get a chance, it's a pretty big mess right now. Not sure when that will be, though.

I think what bosh said would be handy.
"bullets should go faster."

And yeah this is really annoying too it happend every time i do a magic spar or something

DripZ 05-25-2011 03:33 PM

Why should bullets go faster? Mages are already pretty strong and can also spam endless bullets there is no reason for bullets to go faster when you can already spam them. That would make mages nearly unbeatable if they go faster. Unless you add cooldowns.

Made this video a little while ago but never posted it.

It's mostly the same problem.

The wand and targeting system has been rescripted.

A couple of bugs have been fixed:
  • You don't lose a target after a player leaves your level on the map.
  • You will never have to reconnect to be able to select players anymore (was randomly happening before).
  • The cast delay now applies to hotkeys and when selecting in the spell menu.
  • Targeting should always be good now.
  • Cone spells (banishment, etc.) won't go off course when targeting an NPC anymore.

The autotarget feature has been removed. I don't plan to add it back as it was fairly useless (randomly selecting doesn't really give you control), but if someone has a good idea for a better one I will consider it.

There are also some changes which magic users will like:
  • You can now hold down the mouse button and drag it on the screen to select a target. This makes it infinitely easier to target a moving player.
  • You now have an extra 1.5 tiles on all sides of players to target them, which makes quick targeting much easier.
  • If you double-click, the spell is always targeted at your mouse position, but you won't lose your target. Pressing 's' or using a hotkey will always send to the target. This lets you strategically cast things like wall of thorns.

It seems to be working well, but please report any bugs you find to me and I'll fix them as fast as I can.

I'm not usually one to erage this bad but this + the no knockback thing is really queer.

I'd talk to Tig about it. It is a pretty big deal that now mages have to wait for their wands whereas before they didn't, so he may be open to lowering the time on some wands if they're excessive.

MajinDragon 06-05-2011 05:05 PM

Hotkeys shouldn't have bypassed casting times in the first place, it made no sense. Made the notion of casting times redundant. And knockback was put back onto spells btw.
The drawback to this is i feel that while casting times are neccessary, they should be universal to every spell. Certain spells should cast faster, like singular bullets or minor heals and cures, which just don't seem right at all, on a scale of usefulness, with such long casting times. 1.5 seconds is a good time to wait for a cone/storm but but bolts should possibly be 20% faster than that and bullets and minor heals and cures about 50% faster.

Packratia 06-05-2011 05:19 PM

If you hold down a spell hotkey to keep casting the spell, it just does the animation for the prepare to cast and won't actually cast unless you let go of the key.

With such long cast times shouldn't spells have a reduced chance of being interrupted when hit? Spells will even get stopped if someone swings at you with a weapon and it misses.

ViperZakuto 06-05-2011 05:24 PM

you should only stop casting if they hit you. that makes more sense.

cbk1994 06-05-2011 05:45 PM

Made a couple of changes/fixes:
  • Changed the color of the spell charging to a yellow (looks better imo), fixed the color sometimes being white (or another color) for other players
  • Directors and spell walls (bullet wall, etc.) always cast in the player's direction now instead of toward the target as they were before.
  • You can't use a hotkey while a spell is charging now (before this was only stopping your spell and restarting it).
  • Fixed a glitch where you can switch from a fast wand to a slow wand and keep the fast speed.
  • If a monster dies or a player logs off who you have targeted it will now unselect the target (before you had to right click or choose a new target).

These will be live soon.

Fixed on debug.
