Expand 'Boats'!

Thought it relevant since the Crypt drop discussion has digressed and highlighted issues of the Kingdom dungeons and Boats & Ferries.

Alright, basically the general consensus on ferries is that they're too slow and are almost completely redundant since a player can run through the dungeons and get to their kingdom island, or back to main, quicker than the ferry can. And with less complications (accidently unstick / not enough plat / just miss the ferry). And while there is the option to build your own boat, it's not that much faster, especially since few carry 50 boards with them at all times.

I propose there be several more boat designs which include the current boat(boat A), a smaller and faster boat(boat B), an even smaller rowing boat (Boat C), and a large battleship(Boat D). Boat A would stay the same.

Boat B would have no cannons and fall in hp faster than Boat A, both naturally and from cannonballs. There would also be only a very small cargo room. Being smaller it would be faster and more nimble, able to go through smaller gaps. It would cost less boards to make (~30).

Boat C would require very few boards to make (~15). It would be very small and have no cannons or cargo hold. Low phys and str players won't be able to utilize it as greatly as the stronger, and would prove slower than boats A and B in that case. An unrealistic yet interesting feature could be the option to 'pack up' the boat and place it in your inventory, essentially making it a personal ship. It would weigh a little over the 15 boards it costs to make and not be placeable in a container. It would not be possible to cast/fight from this ship as it is too small and fragile. It's hp would go down faster than boat B both naturally and from cannonballs. It's hp would stay the same as it was when picked up and be repairable from anywhere by clicking on the unique 'Repair boat' icon which the cargo hold button would normally be.

Boat D would be a larger version of Boat A, slower but with more cannonballs, more resilient, more costly to build. The pinnacle of naval warfare.

These expansions to the current boat system would keep boats relevant to island-to-island travel and in some cases, crucial. I think it for the best that Kingdom dungeons are kept as just dungeons and not links to the main-land and back. It makes little sense to me how travelling down 2 flights of stairs puts you under the sea...
There'd be another stage to this expansion, and that involves scrolls teaching one of how to build ships A, C and D, making B the normal boat that should be taught to noobs on start-island. These would be mental based (crafting) and also need a revision and reset of the mental skill which has been long overdue.

Boat A would still rape everything in battle. If Boat D had more cannons the cannons would be spaced out enough so that only one cannon would actually hit a boat A. It would work against another Boat D but if your ever in a position to hit someone bang on, with both cannons, then your doing bad because you will be able to hit you full on as well. You would only give as much damage as you receive. The best strategy in winning a boat battle is to be one being chased and only let me get into a position where you can shoot the front segment of their boat and they can't do anything to you since their cannons (near the middle of the boat) would miss you completely which forces them to turn or continue to sail on, get a few shots off on you but ultimately lose 20-30% in a matter of seconds.

Also, Boat A can be manned by 1 person who can both sail it and operate a cannon. Boat B would need 2-3 people (1 sailor, 2 gunners?). Now surely having 3 Boat A's out at sea is better than 1 Boat D.

I welcome the new boats though, just saying where I'd stand on the Boat A/D situation.

If there was more travel by Sea I'd love to see this update.

Also, I think having slight differences instead of huge re-makes of the ships would be better. I'd love to see:

Boat A, 100% hp, 100% speed, our current ship cannon on left and right side.

Boat B: 75% HP, 125% speed, cannon on right side and the bow of the ship.

Boat C: 150% HP, 75% speed, cannon on left, right, and front.

Boat D: 15% hp, 150% speed, no cannon or cargo hull.

25% speed
100 ****in cannons

I think the cannons on the boats are fine the way they are. Boat battles as they are now is a lost artform. Naith may be the best that is still around.

Maybe it would be cool if you could own your own boats, and maybe customize below-deck.

From this list, Boat D would be cool for traveling but Boat C would trump the rest in combat, even without using the front cannon. Would trade 25% speed for another 50% HP, and I'm not even factoring in the front cannon. I can't see myself making a lot of usage out of the frontal one.

I like the idea of a pure travel boat though. (Boat D)

Here is a nice looking big boat =)

i like this idea, and support it!

That boat is nice and fits GK but it needs to be completed.

ViperZakuto 05-17-2011 01:23 AM

that it does.

As soon as boats are fixed in V6 I'd love to take Naith up on a battle... I can't get a Fleet Admiral in Zormite because they'd have to beat me in a ship battle to get the position. I hear Naith is having the same problem in CP.

I'm sure Boat C would be evened out for the fact it'll never be fast enough to catch up to any other boats, anyone can run away at any time.. and if it's a planned boat battle I'm sure both people would be on Boat C.

Another thing I'd like to see is Cannonballs doing more damage. Make them have a critical chance to knock out 10%. 1/4 chance. It's a flaming cannonball of death and I can handle 60 of them before my boat sinks.

If we had three boats that worked in a sort of triangle, as in Boat A > Boat B > Boat C > Boat A, etc.. would be really cool for boat wars/battles. I'd also love to see Kingdom Core have more than one map.. one map should be ocean based. Mandatory use of ships.

An actual pirate ship probably took more. But on Graal Kingdoms I think they do about 3-4% each, that's about 25-35 cannonballs. I think that is fine. Maybe could be less for set up boat events, but then you could just beat up the boats yourself. (Maybe add a command)

Kingdom Core
Would really love to stray away from this. But perhaps put a similar (if not the same) objective into the kingdom castles themselves. I really miss wars being fought on the nation's actual fronts.

Another thing I miss. I fear that sea combat has died off and only has a place in nostalgic events or newbies getting jollies blowing up non-mobile ships.

But as you say, if boats could be made mandatory somehow I guess Graal Kingdoms could see an increased amount of boat-related combat situations.

Memitim 05-17-2011 03:28 AM

Would be rather lovely to see something done with the boats :3

BigBear3 05-17-2011 03:55 AM

I don't think that boats need fixing, but it would be nice to see one of my favorite pieces of Graal Kingdoms updated.

Seeya 05-17-2011 04:22 AM

Even if Ships were fixed on V6 that'd be fine for now. I can understand why it hasn't happened, to my knowledge the boating system is messy.

i really like the idea of more boats with different styles and stats. would be SO much easier to get to other islands

Yeah, the only part of the idea I would really like to see is the transport boat with higher max speed.
